Has anyone noticed yet that the manufacturers seem to be slowly doing away with powdered laundry soap? In my town, there is about 80% liquid soap on the shelves and 20% powder

I can't lift those big bottles because of several surgeries to the arm and so I guess that I'll finally have to figure out how to make the powder soap. That should be very interesting. What does everyone think about this?

I have a stash of laundry soap (supposedly less toxic than most name brands) that I'm using up and have been planning for something new when it runs out. I found the recipes in the other forums - you all are wonderful! I'm on the lookout for a salad shooter now :)

Hi Everyone,

I finally made my first batch of laundry powder! My really old food processor worked really well - and I had everything mixed and ready to use in about five min. I washed my first load afterwards and I can't believe how much cleaner the clothes looked and smelled. Thanks for all of the suggestions. I'm hooked for sure.

I know there is a linke to a place where you can buy the works to make your own laundry soap off of the Duggar's website. You know, the family with 19 kids? It looks simple enough, but I'd sure want a power grinder. I have fibromyalgia and my hands barely make it thru zesting a lemon .
I really miss powdered detergent and I've been extremely cranky ever since they discontinued Ivory Snow flakes.

I've also noticed. But I grate my soap and add washing soda. Right now I'm out of washing soda and just using soap...and not much at that.

I ran a load of laundry the other day and forgot completely to use any soap. Everything came out smelling clean and sweet! Maybe there's soap residue in the washer, enough for a load at least now and then.

Thanks everyone for the information. I've seen all of the ingredients around here except the super Washing Soda. I'll need to find that one. Thanks for the link Yarnmamma - I would have been searching for hours. I'll let you know how it does when I find the Washing Soda.

I use a rotary parmesan grater like the ones used in restaurants.

a friend of mine uses a salad shooter she got at a garage sale - it makes FANTASTIC soap shreds! I've been on the hunt for a cheapo salad shooter ever since then. :)

I have a hard time with the huge Costco bottles of laundry detergent, so I saved a couple of empties and then divide the huge amount into a few smaller ones - that way it is lighter and I am less likely to splash it all over.

I've never thought about using a food processor - that's a great idea. My injury to my arm/hand were many many years ago and it is the way it will always be now. However, it's best not to stir it up. I'm sure that there are instructions somewhere on this site of how to make the powder soap. I'll just need to figure all of this out and maybe store it in a big container where I can scoop out what I need. I'm just glad that it wasn't only me who notice the soap disappearing. Now if I can find all of the ingredients in my area.

Yes, I have noticed it is disappearing in the all the stores. Even the cheapo brands are. That and the fact that the liquid ones are now packaged with less ounces for more money. Glad I know how to make my own!!!

Tina! take care of your arm and hand.
I like the idea of a chopper...I'm going to get one now...it's a good excuse. I have a bad hand/arm also. I am happy to have a good reason to buy a cheap chopper. I've seen them for $15...would pay for itself by the laundry soap and also I'd have a chopper for cooking!
Hope your arm/hand feel better soon.

My wrists are shot, so I get my husband or one of my sons to grate the soap for me. I have noticed how fast my homemade soap can vanish home here. My oldest two sons loves using it.

What about using a grating machine. With a bad arm, it may be worth it to buy a machine just for grating soap-like a small food processor. I don't usually advocate buying appliances often, but if I had a arm problem, I may do that instead of injuring myself further.

Tina, just be careful of your arm when grating the soap for the homemade.
Alee Posted - Jan 26 2009 : 2:55:16 PM
I haven't noticed a change, but I have been making the powder homemade soap for about mmm 3 or 4 years now. I bet you would love the homemade stuff!
