In your opinion which is better and why for the homemade laundry soap, the liquid or the powder? Also, I have to hang up all of hubbys and DD T-shirts to dry, in the winter they hang inside. If I use ACV as a fabric softerner when they're inside hanging will they lose the ACV smell?

I mix equal parts Boraxo powdered hand soap, Washing Soda, and Borax. My hubby's clothes are always greasy or covered with red dirt. This gets it all out. My hubby doesn't usually like homemade things but he likes how his clothes come out. Using the hand soap cuts out grating. Takes less than 2 min to measure and mix. I just love it. This is with an HE washer. I just use 2 tsp. measuring cup from children's cough syrup. Any more will leave a residue. Haven't had septic problems.

This is so great! My husband, who is the world's biggest skeptic, is even sold on this detergent. When he went to hunting camp last fall he took some with him so he could do his laundry and couldn't get over how well it worked - he tells people about it now... |

Thanks for the tips girls. I'm going shopping tomorrow, it looks like I have Mother Hubbards cupboards here :) and at the top of my list is all the stuff I need to make my first batch of laundry soap! YAY! I can't wait to try it out...I never thought I would be excited to do laundry :P

I just use regular white vinegar in the wash and have no problem with vinegar odor. I also use the powdered laundry soap. My husband has even started making it for me. Now that is progress!

I prefer the liquid homemade laundry soap versus homemade powder. Before homemade laundry soap I used commercial powder soap. I like the liquid because it cleans better for my clothes. Do you need the recipe for it? I have the recipe posted on my blog - http://www.homesteaderbellesblog.blogspot.com/
I have never tried to use apple cider vinegar as a softener. I do use white vinegar and I hang all of my clothes up to dry in the house.

Tina- this recipe can be used in a front loader. When I have used them in the past, I just toss the detergent in with the clothes- or you can use the powder detergent cup. No problems!

I now use the powdered laundry soap. I've made the liquid in the past but didn't like it as much as the powdered because it would separate and had to be mixed before scooping it up to put in the washer. I use white distilled vinegar in the last rinse and there is no vinegary smell when the clothes are done, whether they are dried in the dryer or elsewhere. There have been no problems with the soap clogging up the pipes as I dissolve it in an inch or so of hot water in the washer then fill the rest of the way with cold.

The only thing as far as being better for your septic, is that the powder can cause a sludge that can back up your pipes, but thats only if you use cold water or your powder doesnt dissolve the whole way. Mom uses baking soda and borax and hasnt had much troubles. I used powder detergent, but havent really had any troubles with dissolving.
If you dont mind, what is ACV?

I like the powder as it is easier to make and less messy, but if your water comes out really cold, dissolve it in a cup or two of hot water first to prevent any un dissolved bits.
As far as the vinegar- if you use the right amount, as it dries the smell will dissipate and leave a sweet fresh scent behind. If it doesn't reduce the amount you are using.
