Oh honey, It smells B.A.D and the whole kitchen now REAKS .. throw it away.. I hate sponges and dish cloths that are used more than two days. They STINK they go ! I have tossed a sponge or two in the dishwasher a time or two..But ewwwwwwwww nasty ones get tossed... I have many. two drawers in the kitchen hold dish towels, & cloths.. I love the knitted & crochet ones..They wash & dry beautifully.

Me too...that smell is the worst! I used to bleach them, which took care of the germs and smell, but is no good for the environment. I find if I put some homemade laundry detergent in the washing machine with all my dirty kitchen cloths, towels, and rags, and let them soak for an hour or so, then wash as usual, they come out smelling sweet. If they are REALLY bad, use hot water to soak :) ~jennie |

Every morning I get a new cloth for the dishes and I don't use the same one for the cleaning of counters etc. At night I hand them on the indoor clothesline where my wood stove is and then put them in the laundry in the morning when they are dry. Can't stand the smell and the germs.

I use a sponge with a scrubby side to wash the dishes that don't go into the dishwasher, but I use a cloth for counters, etc. That gets changed at least once a day along with the hand and dish towel. I rinse my sponge thoroughly after use and put it standing upright in a little flower pot next to my sink with the dish brush and fingernail brush.. it dries fast and always smells sweet...no probs here... I can usually use them til they fall apart.... lol

I was getting so annoyed at my room mate leaving the wet dirty sponge in the sink! It gets so stinky and once that smell is there it never goes away! I was going through so many sponges so I gave up and banned sponges from the kitchen. I now use a wash cloth and rinse and hang it out after each use. Now my room mate won't even go near the the wash cloth....which is bittersweet! Good because it will never get left in the sink and bad because he never wipes the counters.

It just occurred to me that I might have sounded like I was dissing those of our Farmgirl sisters who do use sponges, and believe they're killing germs by microwaving them periodically. It's great that they're aware of the germ-spreading capacities of sponges. Don't use sponges here. If you rinse your dishcloth in cold water after use and hang it to dry it won't get smelly.

Ick! I'm like you Mara. I have no use for sponges, either. I used to use sponges, but then I realized they were costing me quite a bit of money each year. I stopped buying them and just use dishcloths and rags. I like to lay it over the divider in the sink so it dries a bit faster and is less likely to stink.

Not only do those nasty sponges smell bad, but think of all the germs and other nastiness they contain, especially when used to wipe up spills on the counter and various other spaces.

Sponges are a major source of bacteria in the home. I don't have a single use for them anywhere in my life. I depend on cheap washcloths and rags that I can throw in the laundry (with homemade soap and vinegar in the fabric softener cup, right after I use them. The vinegar sweetens the fabric. Usually, I finish them in the dryer with a drop or two of Rosemary essential oil sprinkled on one of the cloths. |

My DH and the guys at my office DO NOT understand why I continuosly throw these nasty smelly things away! EWWY! I rather use a real cloth that I can wash and sanitize..

I also toss them in the dishwasher or microwave to sterilize, & religiously change my dishtowel and dish cloth every day. Sometimes twice if I have been cleaning up any raw meat mess. |

oh my goodness..lol..Glad to know I am not alone. I can't stand when that happens. It stinks so bad and then it gets slimy...gaggag!! I toss them too and boy do I get in trouble..lol. I started making my own so when I tossed them I didn't have to hear about it..lol

I zap my sponge every day or so in the microwave.
Make sure it is wet, and zap it for a minute.
