Except 3 places settings. Okay not really but I am sure tempted! I just got done doing 4 loads of dishes, and I still have at least one left to do! The other night Doug and I did all the dishes working together for 40 minutes! And they are already built up again. I have been busy with Mid-Terms so housework slipped a little. Even when all the dishes are clean when I go to bed, I wake up and find a bunch of glasses and bowls and plates dirty. I think Doug things that he has to get a new dish if he even looks at one. It's frustrating and I feel like it is such a waste of dish water. But I guess if we only had three place settings, then we would have to wash dishes just as often and probably just use as much water since I use stopped up sinks and not a dishwasher.

My Dh must be odd too, he likes to do dishes also.....
I have a dishwasher, but, with only 2 of us, its a waste(DH says), mine sit until morning(I am wiped out in the evenings) and then I wash them....

My thought on this is why can't Doug wash dishes? I have somewhat the same problem but my husband has been working for almost 14 days straight for 12 or more hours. Most of my dishes are from dinner the night before. My husband loves to do the dishes when he can (I know this is odd). I just finished last nights dishes and I'm ready to make more.
I find that if we let them help their way they some times will surprise you later by doing without being asked. Which is a good thing.

I have the same problem with my husband, and he doesn't even bring the dirty dishes to the kitchen, let alone wash them! We have no dishwasher either (well me! lol). *sigh* I just got over it though. lol He's also the king of the perpetual "later". I find dish washing relaxing now, it's MY time, to think and relax. I used to hate washing dishes when I was younger though, go figure.

Alee, I don't have dishwasher either and boy do they pile up fast. If I miss doing the dishes even one day, it seems as though the whole counter is full. And then I can't do them all at once because the dish drainer fills up, so they back up even further.
My husband has an interesting excuse for not doing dishes. His hands are too big to fit inside cups and glasses, and he always seems to break at least one. I've tried getting him to do everything else and leave the glasses for me, but somehow it doesn't seem to happen. |

Alee I bought me a sponge on a stick that I put my dish soap in I wash the dishes as they come to the sink as I am the one who usually brings them to the sink. I use the same dishes every day every one has there own set and that is all that is every out. When My girls were Nora's age they would help. I would always have a chair or stool and they would do there dish or what ever.

Yes, I have to agree that you need to limit the number of dishes that are readily available.That way you won't have the constant struggle with keeping too many dishes clean. I have a very stern rule with the glass a day rule.It works like magic! I also find it so much easier to deal with doing dishes after breakfast and after dinner. Everyone here knows that mom won't do or help anyone until after dinner dishes. I always enlist a helper too,even if it's just to keep me company. I use to have your problem where I often thought there wasn't enough hours in the day. Then, I read somewhere where you should treat the running of the house like a business and you are the CEO.I hardly ever feel overwhelmed anymore even with taking constant care of my mother, helping the kids, etc., and keeping up with my seamstress business. Gook luck and remember to breathe!

I don't think putting all the extras up is such a bad idea. You could keep them boxed for holidays or when you have guests but limit everyone to one set. Even if you get stuck washing them all it's still a whole lot less.
We were really bad about drinking glasses in my house. I got rid of all the extras and now we are much better about it!

Oh Alee....
I find myself wondering all the time where I went wrong and sent the message that i was the only one in the house that could actually wash dishes.. I dont remember sending out such a memo, but apparently the men in my house seem to think that is the way it is. UGH! I really like Jami's solution although we would be eating out of our hands in no time.. maybe then they would at least wash their own hands, although I am not holding my breath. :)

I can relate too.
I used to have a neighbor who set her table with a placemat and setting with glass and mug for each person. As they used anything they had to wash it and put it right back. They had a bowl for soup, cereal or salad on top of their plates. She said it worked wonderfully. I don't know how it would fly at my house..maybe when all the kids are older. I don't know that my 11 year old son would get his own dishes clean enough to not get sick..haha. But it IS a thought. Of course with a baby in the house you would be doing for two anyhow. And of course Mom gets the pots and pans by default, right. Sigh.
I do have my youngest daughter helping with dishes now as her regular (not rotated) extra chore. She likes the little raise in allowance and the responsibility.
Good luck Alee. My husband is help with some things..but I dont' think I have ever managed to get him to wash dishes. Men!

Oh Alee, I can so relate.
I am the dishwasher at my house too. I swear I washed every dish in the house yesterday/last night-twice.
Don't feel bad. It won't kill Doug to wash a load.

It's a great idea in theory, but Doug seems to think that he is entitled to a never ending "I'll do it later" card and the later might be 3 months later. :( Oh well. The dishes are mostly done and I am going to tell Doug he has to wash the remaining dishes right after football.

Tina, that was my thought exactly! It's a little lesson I learned from my mom -- which she put into effect AFTER her three daughters had grown and gone! (We were her 'automatic dishwasher'.) Once she and my dad retired, she made it a rule to reuse the cup or glass you had used all day long -- don't see why it couldn't be applied to other dishes as well.
That said, I'm with you -- I'm tired of doing the dishes. We don't have a dishwasher, either. And I confess that some nights I'm just not up to doing the supper dishes. But oh how I hate seeing them in the a.m.!
Sigh. When my husband is not working such long hours, he washes -- I dry and put away. But right now I'm with you. Doing dishes.

hmm why can't you make a new rule to where only one glass is used by a person all day long? and only 1 plate and 1 bowl per day.1 fork, 1 spoon, 1 knife
And the rule being that if you dirty your personal set of dishes..you wash it..if you are in the kitchen making a meal for yourself you wash all the items that you have dirtied?
With my kids I make them use the same cup all day long they simply set their cups by the sink and use it over again when they are thirsty.
If my daughter decides to bake something she knows that any messes she makes in the kitchen she will have to clean up..that includes wiping down the counters and washing any pans/cookie sheets /mixing bowls she uses.But hey if it means tossing out all the dishes then go for it girl! :0) good luck to ya.
