Posted - Sep 29 2008 : 12:23:37 PMMy house (one floor rancher)has electric heat - we need to do something different and am considering a corn burning stove - corn is cheap here (I already have a source for clean corn)$7 for 50 pounds. My situation is as follows - my kitchen and my kennel (a former garage) are connected and I have electric baseboard heat in both the kitchen and kennel - I keep door open between the two rooms - kitchen is closed off from living room by french door- living room would be possible place for stove and I would put screen doors on my office and bedroom (to keep cats out)I can close off room we use as closet/storage and I can use electric heat in my bathroom. I am interested in your experience with either of these stoves and which is the safer (around cats)and safer in general - I can vent out through the ceiling to attic and out roof - the only wall I have in living room I can use backs to the garage/kennel area. I use an oil filled electric heater in my cabin up the hill (one room) and in the back cottage for plants which I can continue to use. Thanks Kathy of the Enchanted Wood
Posted - Sep 29 2008 : 1:33:34 PMMost importantly-Our pellet stove caused no harm to our cat and she is on everything! We have had 2 different pellet stoves, the first about 12-14 years ago and that thing was great! Heated the whole house (1000sq ft) on 1 bag of pellets a day. When we moved we bought a Whitfield pellet stove to suppliment the oil heat we had. When the oil furnace died we switched to wood heat because there is no way a pellet stove could heat this "barn". The whitfield we had was a lemon it was one problem after another in fact I got to the point I would not run it if I wasn't in the room. Check the cost of pellets in your area and consider that you will probably go through a bag a day, pellets are cheaper if you buy them by the ton (50- 40 lb bags).
