One of the women I deliver food to for our food pantry has a daughter who was in a car accident last Friday. Jan (her daughter) comes over a couple of times a week to help her mom around the house. So I volunteered to fill in for her a few days a week until things start to return to normal.

Well.....Robbie and I have been making our own cleaning products for the last few years or buying green. I didn't take anything with me to her house because I didn't want to send the wrong message ("Your stuff isn't good enough so I brought mine." I don't know her well enough to know how she'd take it.) Dishwashing was fine but when I used her cleaner to mop the floor, I'm not sure if I used too much or I just wasn't used to it anymore or a combination of both but I did not feel good for the rest of the night. I was pretty green by the time Robbie got home a few hours later.

I went back today after running some errands for her and we got to talk more while I worked around the house. I had my stuff in the car this time but didn't need it. Next week when I mop the floor you can be sure I'm using my cleaner - and we're getting to know each other better so I feel more comfortable doing it.

Lesson learned: those conventional products we grew up with really aren't so good for you. I didnt' realize the effect they were having on me until I used healthy ones for awhile. I sure didn't think I'd have a reaction. Just imagine what it's doing to children who walk around at the level where those fumes hang. Makes ya think, huh?

God bless -
Karen

You can also dust with just a slightly damp rag. If you furniture has a hard glossy finish to it, the oil won't be absorbed so a damp cloth is better than oil.

Dawn, I looked in the only book I could find at the moment - Green Clean. One of the cool things about this book is that it's a water and stain resistant book so you can carry it around while you're cleaning and not mess it up! (House is still a wreck; that's why I went for the first book I could find. Will it ever be cleaned/straightened now that I've found the farmgirls?).

Here are two recipes:
#1: 3 parts olive oil to 1 part distilled white vinegar (for deeper cleaning)
#2: 2 cups olive oil and the juice of 1 lemon (light cleaning and "glow")

Dawn, so glad this helped! I brought my own cleaning supplies to Diane's Monday and no problems - although even with the green-ish dishsoap I bought her, I could still smell the fragrance all night long.

Kim, there are a lot of good books out there, magazines are putting articles on making your own cleaners in them and a google search on "homemade cleaners" will bring up a ton of sites. You'll find most of the recipes are similar if not identical. If you have baking soda (for scrubbing), vinegar (for disinfecting)and hydrogen peroxide (for bleaching/disinfecting), you have most of what you need. I use 100% therapeutic grade essential oils in mine for extra anti-just-about-anything power.

Here is one of my favorite tips: When you have a dish with baked on gunk, sprinkle some baking powder over the gunk then spritz with water. Let it sit for at least 30 minutes and then scrub. It usually lifts it off so there's no real scrubbing involved. Like magic!

Kim, Here is the website I got all of my cleaning recipes from:
http://www.wmeac.org/index.php/tools/green-cleaning-guide/

Just click on the pdf form to download the cleaning recipes under "Green Cleaning Guide". This website is a superb source for information.

You will see how easy it is to not only make your own cleaning products, but how economical and good for the environment it is too.

I had a friend say to me the other day that she "Doesn't have the time" to make her own cleaning products. I just laughed and pointed out that I have vinegar & water to put in a spray bottle for all glass and granite surface cleaning. I have a big container of vinegar with tea tree oil for disinfectant bathroom cleaner that I just put in a spray bottle with water. That I have many other simple recipes like that to clean with. All I have to do is walk down to the kitchen & refill my bottles. She on the other hand, has to cut coupons, watch sales ads, go to the store to buy what she is out of & then put it away! I told her I don't have the time for all that!

Have fun living the green life!

I would be interested in knowing what you all use for cleaning products. What do you dust with?

Another thing about the carpet dusting powders, they clog the vaccum sucking holes. I have aDyson and had to take it in for cleaning and the woman asked if I used those carpet dusts, I said no,they got clogged from my almost ex hubby( i could have divorced him for this) using it to suck the dust from when he put up a new wall in our home.

Heather - I'm feeling much better. Thanks for asking. It only lasted the one day but I learned my lesson. This week I'm taking my own cleaning products.

Dawn - Isn't is so much fun to make your own?

I agree that the store bought cleaners can really make you ill. I have been making my own cleaning products for over a year now, so I am used to odor free too. I can always smell the strong bleach, lysol and Windex odors in friends homes. It gives me a headache and can make me quite queasy. I always try to suggest we sit outside whenever the smell gets to me. I never explain why I want to go outside so bad, I just say "it's beautiful out, lets sit on the deck." This way no one gets offended.

Scented candles really get to me too, especially if they all have a different scent.
