Putting handwashing liquid dish soap in a washing machine?? Hahahaaaa.....

Don't. Trust me.

I tried to take a shortcut, 'once can't hurt, I'll go to the store for detergent in the morning' thing....

JUST ONE LOAD!!! Who would have thought....

It makes a dishwasher LEAK like it has a GAZILLION holes in the bottom!!!!

I thought the dishwasher had issues...turns out it was just operator error. LOL

A conversation with an appliance repair man...vegetable oil...and REAL washer detergent later....

It works fine.

salt will also cut the suds really fast if they're threatening to overtake your house.

I do this and I agree a teeny tiny amount goes a very long way. I only use a tiny dab about the size of a dime. When I was first learning how much to use though, I did over do it and had the bubbles everywhere. I have tried it in the washing machine for clothes and even tried hair shampoo, still using only a very tiny amount though. I only do this when I am out and can't make a trip to town.

We had been camping once and the girls loaded the dishwasher when we got home. I had taken dish soap in a small conainer, the girls put that in the dishwasher too. Being kids, they didn't empty it first. There was about 1/2 cup of dawn in there. You wanna talk about a mess! That wasn't as bad as the time they put the spaghetti squash with no holes in it in the oven though....but that is a story for another day

My mom did this when I was little....I'll never forget it either!!! We were all laughing so hard, the bubbles were neverending!!! And boy that kitchen floor was clean afterward!

LOL!!! I'm thinking that you gals had the cleanest floor in town after cleaning up all those wayward suds. I've never done this myself because I heard of someone who had. Their dishwasher turned rabid and leaked foamy suds all over her kitchen. Not fun at the time but a great story afterwards.

Yikes! Can't say I've ever DONE that, but it definitely sounds like something I'd do in a pinch. So thanks for the warning! Ha ha.

I think those of us with dish washers have all tried this at least once..LOL at the time that you ggoof it isn't a laughing matter as you are running about looking for towels as bubbles keep going everywhere and spilling out of the bottom of the dish washer..LOL but afterwards it certainly makes for a laugh.

Use vinegar in the rinse cycle..i just put some in the little area designed for the stuff that gives you 'no spots' on your dishes..hope I explained that well enough. Ya know..where the jet dry is supposed to go! LOL

Sagewood, you said what I was going to say. I've done this alot too, but it seems dishwashing liquid is so concentrated when it comes to sudsing...yeah, a little works, but it sure does go a looooong way... I didn't even put baking soda in it. I noticed, I tried the baking soda, and it makes my glasses cloudy. :(

Now, I have to tell you ladies, I do this all the time. The key is only a little..a very little, then I put in a large spoonfull of baking soda to 'keep the bubbles' down. Have only had it leak on me twice in the last year, because I put too much soap in it. That was when I was learning how much soap to use. I gues if I were to take a guess, it's only about 1/2 teaspoon in each cup holder, with the large spoonfull of baking soda on top of that. :) GOOD LUCK should you decide to try again!

Lucky you had such an easy and inexpensive fix! I haven't tried that before, but I have for sure had the thought cross my mind. Thanks for posting your results; you've saved me from having to clean up the same mess. ;)

LOL Glad I'm not the only one...

The vegetable oil de-suds it...gives the suds something to do. So I just drained it, quick rinsed with the oil to clean it out, and I was good to go.

LOL...I did this once too. I only had enough soap left to fill half the cup. Should be enough anti-sudsing agent to not cause to big a problem, right? WRONG!! I didn't know about the vegetable oil though, not that I plan on ever doing that again! Somethings are NOT worth doing twice!
