My friend and boss has a deck made out of this stuff. And on the trex deck he has mold...green and black...He's tried numerous ways to get rid of it, including 'outdoor Clorox'(didn't know there was such a thing. And I sure didn't know trex was susceptible to mold. Anybody have any ideas about mold removal? I also didn't know trex was 'real wood'...sort of thought it was something artificial. Sure won't be using it myself. :(

Thanks Pat For the Post..

I had been meaning to try to find this again to let Janice Know what I'd found out from My Husband who uses the Trex on all the Decks he puts in & kept forgetting til I saw your Post..
Good to see the info.. i'll make sure he has it too..

HOWEVER!!

Janice.. Butch says he's NEVER had a Porch get eiether Mildewed OR Moldy!
Which just astounded me.. Since we are here In lorida.. so everything seems to stay wet & icky most of the time..
AND because I have just REGULAR REAL wood on my back steps & If i'm not careful & don't pay attention..
It will develope a beautiful shade of green over nite just out of the blue & I'll wipe out & go sailing across the yard if I'm not careful!

But Butch says that All of his decks are covered.. Meaning a small roof over.. so THIS may be making a difference..
But they don't ever have to use anything to clean them..
Strange huh..?
I think he's probably put in between 100 & 200 in the last couple years now..
So the environment must be perfect for it where he's using it..

(He needs to drag me home about 20 boards before I break a hip I think!!)

Good Luck Toots..

Dear Miss Bee Haven,

I am a representative of Trex and came across your post and wanted to reply.

Mold and mildew is an environmental issue and originates from pollen, dirt, grass, etc. We recommend the following cleaning products to alleviate the mold and mildew.

Periodic cleaning of your deck, even if it appears clean, is important to prevent the build-up of pollen/debris that can cause mold. One to Two times a year is recommended. Use Conventional deck washes or cleaners that contain sodium hypochlorite and detergent. (Sodium hypochlorite is the active ingredient in bleach) Deck washes by Olympic and Expert Chemical, contain sodium hypochlorite. Eco-Friendly cleaners such as Chomp-Pro Algae & Mold Stain Cleaner & Remover or Corte-Clean Composite Deck Cleaners also work well.

For Madeira, Woodland Brown & Cayenne please do not use full strength deck wash; mix deck wash 50:50 with water. Caution: Deck wash can lighten the color of your deck.

Chomp Pro products are proven to delay mildew regrowth. Trex recommends saturating the boards, as per manufacturers instructions, with this product after cleaning mold from your Trex Deck. NOTE: Chomp Pro barrier products should only be used in tandem with Chomp Pro Algae & Mold Stain Cleaner & Remover products.

If I can be of further assistance please feel free to contact me at question@trex.com or 800-BUY-TREX.

Janice, thanks for the warning about Trex. How no idea and we were going to use it on our porch. Good thing I read your thread, since the porch we were going to redo gets alot of rain and moisture.

Thanks again for the heads up on this product.

Thanks, Kathie. Ron(bossguy) has been looking and reading online and he says that there are a lot of complaints and there was even a class action lawsuit in 2004 against TREX(or whoever makes it). I suggested vinegar(looked up 'mold removal' here on the forum) or tea tree oil(he hates the stuff-think it's the scent of it). And someone even suggested Dawn dish soap. But according to a posting here about mold, using bleach not only won't take away the mold, but it could make it worse. This all seems so weird and unlikely.

Mold Or Mildew or i wouldn't think they'd use it..
Too much of a Liability ya know..
I'll ask him tonight when I get home though.. if they've had a problem.. & if so.. what they've had to clean them with..
Wierd huh?
& Yes! There IS an OUT door Specific Clorox! how Bizzare is THAT!
it's very think though.. & will work twice as hard & strong as regular
Clorox.. I know he's used it again at work.. like when they've had to pressure wash something..
