I have almost no closets in my 1890 farmhouse and need to leave my vacuum in the office but it looks terrible. Any ideas on how to hide it?

I don't wanna put it in the basement only to lug it up each time...

Thanks
Jenn

Oh my goodness Karin that is so funny!!! I am lucky, I have a wonderful mud room and a HUGE built in cabinet in my kitchen that houses the brooms, trash can, fly swatter, extra trash bags, etc! It just looks like a pantry..SURPRISE!!!!

What an amazing life!

Such grood ideas! I love your doll vacuum cover, Kim. And if you have a cannister vacuum, Joni, maybe you could make a cover that looks like R2D2. Ha.

The old shutters made into a screen . . . make-do genius!

My vacuum sits in the back laundry room, patiently waiting. No cover, no screen. Just slightly out of sight, almost always out of mind.

I like the idea of using a screen. I'll have to keep my eyes peeled for some old shutters...thanks for all the great ideas...

kinda' in amie's idea .. you can also get two shutters (i love the olde peely painted ones best) and hinge them together to make a 'corner' for your cleaning things. i'm going to do something like this to hide the hot water heater in the laundry room. xo

You could buy a changing screen/privacy screen and stand it in a corner, making a little nook to hide the vacuum and anything else you want to stash out of general sight. They come in all kinds of styles and might actually add something to the room. I've never bought one myself, but I've seen them in decorating catalogs.

jenn .. like you, i live in an olde house with NO closets! (well, we have two little cubbies for our clothes .. ha! makes a gurl haf'ta pick and choose!) ... luckily we do have a large PANTRY .. so i just tuck the broom and dust pan behind the door! (don't own a vacuum .. we have all wood floors .. no rugs) .. if i have to go after 'dust bunnies' .. i use my 'steam floor cleaner' it grabs 'em .. OR i get down on my hands and knees and go after them!

do you have a room where you can tuck it behind the door? of course, you can also always throw a 'quilt' over it! xo

lol. it caught me off guard a couple times coming home and it was there, especially
at night. now it doesnt bother me at all.. from outside the house( at night with lights on) it looks like someone is setting there.. maybe that is a good thing. :)

Oh my gosh Kim, that is cute, but it would freak me out! I would have to get used to it, I would walk in the room and think it was someone standing there!!! LOL

I would just throw the vacuum out, then you wouldn't have to hide it or use it!!

How cool is that!!! Great job, Kimberly--adorable!

I don't have many closets either in our little cottage, but I bought a cannister vacuum so it would be able to fit-they're much smaller than some uprights.

Jenn, I had the same problem, although I don't have an 1890 farmhouse...have you seen the "doll" vacuum covers that you can get in the catalogs like Lillian Vernon or Harriet Carter and such? I have seen all kinds. First I should say, these are for an upright vac. If that is what y ou have, I will explain what I did. Someone else here gave me the idea and I googled instructions. Go to the thrift store and get a nice big teddy bear. Then go to the children's clothing section and find a nice dress that will fit your teddy. (And yes, there I was in the thrift, trying on my clothing selections on the teddy!) Then I found a women's cotton half-slip. How you make this all work is to put a hole in the bottom of the teddy, and stuff a white cotton athletic sock up the hole. You are making a "sleeve" to fit over the handle of your vac. Then I sewed the cottom slip to the hem of the dress, and some thrifted lace to the bottom of the slip and voila! I had a vacuum cover. Now, "Rose, Our Parlour Maid" stands gracefully in the living room (her dress has roses on it) and she is ready to work whenever necessary. There are patterns to sew the doll body and make your own clothes, but I am basically lazy and when I spied the children's clothes, I figured what the heck! And there I was. I hope this works for you. Judy

I found a skinny cabinet at like Pottery Barn or something...I think it was for cleaning supplies. My vacuum just happened to fit.
