Help! My husband has some nice white dress shirts that he wears for work and the underarms have yellowed stains. Initially, I thought it was sweat and got after him to "double up" on the deoderant, but my mom said she thinks it's a RESULT of the deoderant...that she ends up with it to in white tees. Now, I've noticed that one of my white dress shirts has some yellowing--and I'm not a perspirer...
Anyone have any tips on how to get these stains out? I've tried borax and some simply "shout"...they seem lighter, but aren't gone. I want them gone

I use Dove. I have never had those yellow stains. I took their armpit to underarm challenge about 5 years ago. I have never changed. It's the best I have ever used.

Right on, Sam. Sounds like vinegar is the miracle worker....And, I guess my momma was somewhat right, too...she just didn't say switch my brand/type. I will do that (don't know what hubby can use), and I will work on these stains this weekend. Guess this is a continued challenge until you find the right antiperspirant.

HA!!! I know the answer to this one!!! My best friend growing up, her mother Marna was a laundress....anyway, the stains are caused by deoderant--a chemical in deoderant reacts with the natural heat of the body causing the stain...she says to use anti-perspirant (sp?) instead. (seriously, I didn't know there was a difference, but apparently there is!)....so, she said that she gets a spray bottle, fills it with white vinegar and sprays the stains and let sit for 30 minutes. Then she said that she then recommends using OxyClean for Laundry...washes the shirts by themselves according to label and then air dries them....she said that you may have to repeat, but if it doesn't come out after 2 washings that it's there to stay.
Hope this works for ya...Marna has been working forever, and everybody trusts her, so I am assuming this advice is gold!

When I was in the military and had to wear white t-shirts underneath everything (ie: sweating like a pig 24/7), the only thing that worked for me was letting them soak in bleach and water overnight, washing in COLD water and letting them sun dry if I could.

Well, at this point, I'll give them all a shot. Some of these shirts are sooo nice that I have--very feminine and summery. It's hard to just give them up. His are more replaceable, but gosh I hate to do that when they're right in every other way!
Thanks for the tips. I will do my best to see what works. It's supposed to be sunny again this weekend, so it looks like I have my work cut out for me!!!!

You could try peroxide and the sun. Saturate the stain with the peroxide and set in the sun. Both are required. The sunnier the better.

Jonni, how about soaking them in vinegar and then laying them out in the sunshine to dry?

I've never found anything that works. If anyone has the answer, I'd love to see it. I've grown resigned to just giving up on white shirts after a couple of years. |
