Any suggestions for getting the musty smell out of vintage fabric that has not been stored well?? I know I have done it before but can't remember how, will I never remember to write something down when it works? Thanks for any ideas!!

If that doesn't do it, a little "Lysol" brand liquid cleaner in the wash will take out most any icky smell. I've even gotten out stale cigarette smoke using it. Good luck!

I appreciate it. I was given a whole bunch of canning jars this year and in the bottom of a plastic garbage can filled with canning jars there were some fabrics. I want to give them as a gift to a friend who taught me to sew - they are her style, very early 70's cotton prints - but who wants a smelly gift. I am off to try some vinegar..... |

I find a little borax often helps, and sometimes you can get the spots out by applying lemon juice and hanging the fabric out to dry. Vinegar is great stuff too.

I agree with Alee on the vinegar. I would also line dry on a sunny, still day. Let it get warm, but not whip around.

Maybe try washing, then vinegar rinse then wash again, then vinegar rinse to dry? Vinegar kills the mold and fungus spores that can cause a majority of "musty" smells and as it dries it leaves an indescribable "sweet" smell behind.
