Time to change out to the winter curtains, put down the rugs, put an extra blanket on the bed, pull out the cold weather clothing and I also deep clean the house for winter. I like to dig into the back of my closets and pantries and take stock of what I have. And don't forget to tune up the cars. What are you all doing to prepare for the coming cold weather??? |

I already added a blanket to the bed and I have been keeping the sliding glass door in our room closed now most of the night. It’s still about 45 degree here at night so I do try and keep it open when I can.
I need to get in the garden and pull the last of everything up (except my winter garden) and I would really like to plant spinach and carrots in the greenhouse along with this years crop of garlic.
I cleaned out the chicken coop a couple weeks ago, but I need to add another layer of mulch to the pen.
I really feel the need to clean the house out, but it will have to wait until I can’t work outside. I still need to wind proof the house. I need to make sure everything is picked up and put away. We had 50 mile an hour gusts last night and if this is a typical year we will get gust over 100 miles an hour during the many storms that hit our little town over the winter.
I need to clean the garden tools and do a final clean up in the greenhouse. Hopefully I can get in there this weekend after work.

That's a great idea Diane. I didn't see the stuff while I was there, but I didn't look that hard for it either as I was in a big hurry to get in and out. And those coupons are always showing up in my e-mail. Thanks! I get all my figuring done and wait for that coupon.

I found the stuff at a local fabric store. Now I just have to measure and figure out how much to buy. You were right, it's not cheap and I didn't want to guess!

LJR, there is this fabric called Warm Windows that is wonderful for what you need. It is sold at most large fabric stores, it is not inexpensive, but it is worth it. It has insulation batting, and a foil like fabric, and plastic barrier of some sort all sewn into it. I use it on my south facing window and does it ever help! The way they make it, you can use it to make a roman shade or I even just ran a spring rod thru it at first and hung it plain!It comes in 2 different widths, you might need a couple to fit your window. Hope this helps! |

We have a huge, south facing, aluminum framed window in our house. I'm thinking of making a big, heavy curtain for it so that I can close it up at night to keep out as much of the cold as possible and open it in the day to let in the warming, southern exposure. Has anyone else done this? What kind of material will insualte the best?

We're having a couple of handy men shore up and re-roof a section of our old barn/garage. And possibly replace the two load bearing poles on the side porch, as we discovered when replacing the planks on the first floor of the side porch, they load bearing poles are pretty much shot.
Personally, I'm resisting the urge to go south ... Maine is darned cold ...
I've also been stocking up on food, washing blankets, replacing weather stripping around doors, etc. We did just put in all new windows, so I'm not going to saran-wrap the windows this winter.
We've plucked anything usable out of this year's garden and are attempting to store it somehow. ;)
When does spring come again?? :D |

Oh boy, where do I start? lol Got the last of the fall rye into the garden today, then built a small ramp so that I could put my little lawn tractor into the barn for winter (after I clean and service it). I also bought linseed oil yesterday to treat all the handles of my tools after sitting out in the summer sun. The compost boxes will need to be covered with tarps to keep out the winter rains as much as possible. I should also climb up on the roof and blow off all the pine needles and clean the gutters...actually I should try get that done today as it's supposed to rain by Thursday.
As for inside...I'll worry about that when I can't be outside. Except I did get the oil tank painted with rust resistant paint and the furnace serviced.
Coffee break is over...better get back at it.
Live a good and honorable life. Then when you get older and think back, you'll be able to enjoy it a second time. |
