I remember reading in one of the "Little House" books about how Caroline told the girls to come eat breakfast while their beds aired. I have always thought about that and wondered if anyone airs their bed?

My husband gets up 6-7 hours after I do because he works a late shift. So I don't make my bed very often because by the time he is up- I am well past my "morning" mentality of getting up and making the bed. However as I am trying to get our house set to rights, I am trying to re-learn good habits that my mom tried very hard to drill into my head as a child.

I was putting away clean laundry and the unmade bed was driving me crazy. So I made it- then pull the sheet and comforter (MaryJane's Grange Comforter!) back and threw open the window. It's cold but fresh outside and I am looking forward to climbing into fresh smelling sheets tonight. Though I might make a rice pack since the sheets will be freshly chilled!!

Oh and here is a link that I found interesting:

Oh I love fresh air flowing into the house! Bedroom or not, the whole house is better with a good airing I think!

I air my whole house as much as I can but sometimes, if I am in a hurry, I just do the bedrooms.

Cheers,
Heather

I have always aired our bed. We have a door in our room that opens to a wrap around deck and I am great for throwing all kinds of stuff out there to soak in the sun and the fresh air. I hang quilts over the railings and I had a total stranger stop the other day and tell me how beautiful it looked. Susan

I think I need to have my whole house aired.

I have Home Comforts- I was just reading it in the tub last night, and I read the chapter about airing the beds. I usually make mine up after husband dear heads to work... but I'm going to start letting it air a little while, especially now that I can have the windows open (nice, springy weather here).

The book is great to own. Lots to read and learn about, although lots I don't do.

I'm going to put "Home Comforts" on my list of books to get from the library--might even have to get my own copy. Looks like it would be a wonderful book! I love to keep house!

And yes, I am definitely going to be airing out the bed from now on. That is just disgusting, thinking about not doing it now.

Have always aired the beds. Not everyday and usually not for very long as I leave for work so don't have lots of time for that. I air the matteresses once a week when changing sheets. I may give that book a looksee sounds interesting.

That's the book! My friend read it and quoted the grandmother thing about airing. She LOVES that book and shares lots of tips from it :)

Yep, I do!
We don't have a top sheet though, just a duvet. So after we get up the duvet goes up over the foot board and the window is cracked open (or flung open, weather permitting!) and then we'll have tea, I'll get ready for the day and then I'll make the bed afterwards.

The book mentioned in that blog is great, "Home Comforts". It's the housekeeping bible round here. (Though I certainly don't follow it to the letter, it's monstrous!)

My daughters have mattress toppers and I frequently hang those outside on the line.

I remember reading somewhere that airing a bed was a very good idea, and I agree, it does refresh the sheets a bit. And if it airs all day long, so much the better! Makes perfect sense to me!. Karin

Airing the bed kills dust mites. That's my excuse. When I was single, my bedroom was kept perfectly. Now that there is always something more important to do first, like change a diaper, or get a bottle, making the bed gets put on the back burner.

When we slept at our grandma's house (Italian grandma), she would tell us to leave the blankets and sheets thrown back on the bed while we had breakfast. After breakfast, we made the bed.

These days, my bed usually doesn't get made at all. I'm giving it a good airing everyday, right? Right?

German grandmum, says air for a a healthy bed....English grandmother says, tightly made for a healthy bed....or so my friend advised from one of her homekeep manuals :) I love airing the bed like you say with the windows wide open. I air it that way each week when I put on fresh sheets. - especially when it's too cold and rainy still to hang them out :)
With "spring" cleaning at the moment still going on I unmade the bed clear down to the mattress to wash all the underlayers and sheets, vaccumed the mattress then flipped it, vaccumed that side and aired it out the whole day before remaking it and closed the windows just before bedtime (had to keep the bedroom door closed all day - it's still cold here). It smelled like sleeping outside that night - slept so good! *~*
