Posted - Jan 25 2008 : 08:48:46 AM ok. around 7 years ago i made a ton of soap. i think however that my portions were off just a bit so the bars shrank just a bit in the center (water evaporation). to make my bars look "pretty" i trimmed the edges. needless to say i have a lot of little pieces that are plenty dry. i was wondering if i could use these peices for laundry detergent. i have all the other ingredients, except the soap. do you think i can? there are some lye, some olive oil, some with just a but of corn meal, some have E.O. (but the age ---they are more than likely not smelly anymore + they are all stored together), some with rosemary, they are very hard and would probably powder ok. Would they be all right as long as they powder and dissolve? should i try this first?
i am excited about doing this. i have caught the bug again!!

Posted - Jan 25 2008 : 09:08:00 AM I've made my own soap for years. The trimmings are great for laundry soap, but if they were super- fatted, you will need to add more washing soda & borax. I grind the soap trimming in the food processor with some of the borax, then add the remaining borax & washing soda.
This is my recipe; 2 to 4 cups soap trimmings 12 cups borax 2 cup oxyclean powder, opt. 12 cups washing soda 2 to 3 tablespoons essential oils Whisk together in open area. Wear a dust mask. Store in air tight container or canister. -Use 1/8 cup per load

Posted - Jan 25 2008 : 08:59:17 AM I am contemplating trying my own homemade laundry soap, and have been looking around the Internet, in addition to here, for ideas/comments. I just read this morning about someone using up leftover bars of soap for the soap ingredient part of the recipe. I can't see why yours won't work, but I've never done this before.
Any soapmakers out there experienced with this?
