I can't help it, I was basically raised by my Texas Grandma and her equally fiesty sister, my beautiful great Aunt Kaleta, who is still with us at 96 ( and still fiesty  ) who lived through the depression. So call me a scrounge if you like, but I absolutely DETEST seeing things that are useful, go to waste and get hauled off to the dump. Or seeing perfectly good things overflowing from dumpsters. Why all the waste? Samething with people who have fruit trees on thier property, but let the fruit go to waste.
I haven't checked, my booboo, but do we have a Free classifieds here? I once helped a bunch of college girls that lived downstairs from me, to organize a swap fair...people brought stuff, it was looked over and they were given so much spending credit. It ended up being a lot of fun, kind of like a tag sale. We were fabulously understaffed and it all got a bit wild with people bringing stuff and trying to "buy" stuff at the same time, and then people wanting more than they had credit for and us having to figure out what to charge...in the end we just let people haul whatever they wanted away...I'm sure we broke some laws (This was in Seattle), but the idea is still a pretty good one...I got rid of a LOT of stuff that I was basically just tripping over...I'm a good deal older now and would do things MUCH differently...just a thought for your area...I've been to a couple of garden swaps too and have some nice daylilies and irises to love every year from it.
I hope y'all don't think I'm TOO much white trash for bringing this up but living between two university towns, I'm shocked by the waste.

I don't know if I've mentioned this before, but in my community we have a "Ladie's Auction". Once a month you bring what you have to acution off. Each woman (and it is women only...for a time out) gets a certain amount of time (15min) to sell their stuff. Bidding can start at whatever price is your minimum for that item and goes up by a dime. It's nice to get a little cash, and you don't have stuff building up around the house waiting to go to Goodwill. AND there are always bargains. Where else can you go shopping and only spend a few bucks? You may want to organize sometihing like this in your area!

If you haven't already heard about it, go to www.freecycle.org It was started specifically to keep things out of landfills and it's nationwide.
