I want to put up a clothesline, but I can't decide which would be the better option- the round one or the straight kind. I need some advice...

Thanks-

I think the straight lines are my preference also. I have 5 straight lines now, and have been thinking of converting to a round one, but after reading all this, and looking at round ones, I am not going to give up the straight lines. Problem is, I want to move my clothesline...it is right outside my back door now, and over the grass, and it just isn't "nicely" placed. It is most convenient for hanging clothes, and I suppose that was the main concern for my predecessor, but I want it more out toward the back of my yard which will take some major reorganization of garden space, as well as the dismantling of an aluminum shed, which I don't need and besides, is old and leaky. *sigh* But I will get it done...not this year, but eventually. So another vote for straight lines!

We come from the earth, we go back to the earth, and in between, we garden!

I have had both types of clotheslines...but I still prefer the straight lines. In our yard right now we have the 2 straight lines...but, the Amish use the type Jeanna refers to ... that is a clothesline on a pulley...and it looks like it comes right out their window...so cool. Either way, whatever you use, hanging clothes, sheets and towels our to dry is the best way to dry laundry...in my opinion:) Erica:)

I prefer the straight lines too. Ours is about like the one Cindy described. Great for sheets and things like that. Round is a good option if you have a small area. I also have used the pulley types in the past and like those but they don't seem to work well for heavy stuff.

I have to agree I have had both and the straight ones are the best. I used to have one on a pulley system. I had a high deck and my husband put up a post and connected it to it and then the other end connected to a tree. I never had to move to put out the wash.

If both of our troubles were hung on a line--You would take yours and I would take mine.

You can add another "vote" for the straight kind! I have one that I just LOVE. It was here when we moved in, and I imagine it's been here for at least 50 years - and it's still going strong - the posts, anyway. That's another good thing about them - it's easy to replace the lines if they stretch or break. And, Heather, I've found that also - the ARE good for heavy things.

XOXO, Libbie

My great grandmother had the round, and my mom had the long straight kind (doubled-two lines, parralel-sp) I always prefered my mom's! Like has been brought out when you have big things, or even heavy things, I find the round just doesn't do as well.

I agree that the straight kind is much better for sheets and even for large loads of towels. I've had experience with both and prefer the straight type to the round ones.

When we moved into this house 18 years ago, my husband set up a LOVELY clothesline which is about 20 ft. long and has 4 lines. I needed it that long when the kids were home but even with just two of us, I am still thankful it's that big when I hang out sheets, blankets and quilts. I hang out clothes even in the winter so it takes a long time for things to dry. My sister has a round one because her yard is small and she's not happy with it when it comes to sheets etc. Let us know what you decide! Cindy
