I love using natural cleaning products such as vinegar, alcohol, baking soda and washing soda. But I have a sink that seems to always clog and have yet to find anything "natural" to work. I hate throwing the harsh chemicals down the sink, but am not sure what else to do. Anyone know of anything "green" I can use?

After you have clogs cleared, keep them away by adding a natural bacterial additive like
ZEP Drain Care. You add it w/warm water and let it sit several hrs in the drains, then do it once a week or so to keep the natural bacterial action going in your drains to keep them clear.

Hate to say this, but for bathroom sink clogs, the best bet is to take off the trap (that's the "U"-shaped pipe under the sink bowl) and manually clean out hair, bits of soap bars, etc., that get stuck there. If you're lucky, you'll find a diamond ring lost by a previous resident! :-) |

After reading about the baking soda and vinegar I went home and tried it. WOW so easy and so fast. I pulled the plug on the tub and it was a mess with DD's hair. I always hated using the chemical stuff because it stunk up the house and made us sneeze.
Now I have a better remedy. For those who have had trouble with this try doing it twice. That worked for me. Now I'm going to the 99 cent store and stock up on vinegar (.99 for a 1/2 gallon). Wal-mart has bs for .49 a 1 pound box.

If you go to plumbing stores, they will carry the industrial version of liquid plummer which is nearly all lye. |

how about trying to take the pipe off and get the gunk out, then clean the drain with bs and water or bas and vinegar?

If I have a hair clog- I just dump some lye down the sink according to the instructions- It will burn off the hair and eat up the oils and greases and as you dilute it with water it won't harm things down stream. Lye is the active ingredient in Liquid plummer.

Brenda, I use this in all of our sinks and it seems to work ok for us. I do know, from seeing it, that the BS and vinager work at busting gunk up, the stuff that clings to the inside of drain pipes, as I have seen it flake off oncce I add the boiling water to the mix.

Thanks for the ideas. I have tried baking soda and it doesn't work for this sink . . . it is a bathroom sink, so it could be a hair clog. I am wondering too, as Cristine asked, if this works for hair. I will try the vinager and baking soda combo and see if that works. I just know things like Liquid Plummer are so awful environmentally, but at the same time I need a working sink!

Hi Brenda.. I have good luck with this .. pour 1/2 c baking soda down the drain, followed by 1 c white vinager. Let that fizz and bubble up(it will to, and quite a bit) then as soon as the fizzing stops, immeditly pour a tea kettle full of boiling water down the drain. Then turn your tap on and flush it out.
It seems to always work well for me.

I use coffee grounds to keep my drains from clogging. I have yet to have a clog in the 2 1/2 years we have lived in our home. My mother also swears by them and never has a clog.
To remove a current clog:
1/4 c of washing soda and 3 c of boiling water
~or~
1 c baking soda and 3 c boiling water
either of those ought to do the trick.
