Last year for Mother's Day my daughter bought me a tropical Hibiscus tree, which I love. The greenhouse guy told my dh they do really well if you put them in a planter that holds water at the bottom and you let the roots soak up the water, so dh bought one of those.
Today I was adding water to the little opening and noticed something in the hole. To make a long story short, I got dh to carry the plant outside and take the top part off the water holder. Oh my goodness!!!!!! It was full of mold and junk! It was so nasty I could hardly stand to look at it.
I guess I'm a horrible housekeeper because it never occurred to me to take this thing apart and clean it now & again. So if you have one of these, you might want to take it apart and check it out.
My dd has asthma and allergies and I know others here have similar concerns, plus the mold is just so unhealthy for anyone. Anyway, I thought I'd share.

Is there something you can add to the water that will prohibit the mold but not hurt the plant?

That is very interesting to know! My sister just got two of these and they've been working great for keeping her plants watered, that's too bad that they get bad like that. And it's too bad that there's not an easy way to clean it without taking the plant out and repotting it.

Hi Patti,
I had one of those planters once too - there's a little wick that absorbs the water and keeps the soil moist. But I threw mine out too since mine got all moldy. I wonder if there's a better way to make that type of pot work, because I think it's a good idea, especially if you're going on holidays or something like that.
