I love my dishwasher especially since it saves me a lot of time...but i"m not crazy about using cascade or regular dishwasher powders. I'm wondering if anyone makes or knows of an organic brand dishwasher detergent.

I use Ecover from Whole Foods. No phosphates (Caecade has the highest amount)and it's unscented. It does a superb job cleaning the dishes. It comes in powder or tablet form. I use the tablet.

Lye is organic. It is made by running water through hard wood ashes. It just draws the lye that is already in the ashes out.

Making your own dishwashing detergent is easy! Just add one tablespoon of washing soda and one tablespoon of borax. Use white vinegar in the rinse cycle. Without the white vinegar the dishes can get that dingy build up. Works great!

I just use the Wallyworld stuff, but I saw a recipe for dishwasher soap on this forum that said to use low-sudsing, aka castile, soap for the soap in the recipe.
I know Dr. Bronner's advertises their soap as organic (although of course the lye or caustics you use to make it wouldn't be organic, ha!) and they have a liquid castile but it has more than olive oil in it. As a soapmaker I always thought castile was strictly speaking just olive oil soap.
So I haven't tried it and can't say if it will oversuds your dishwasher or etc., but it might be an idea for you to experiment with...

I am going to bump up a few topics where homemade dishwasher soaps were listed. Also homemade soaps are usually easier on sensitive skins because of all the glycerin in them. You can either ask a soap maker to make you a superfatted soap or buy one online. A lot of us here make our own soap.

i noticed they have laundry detergent...does it have a scent? actually do any of their products have a fragrance?
also...my daughter has eczema and so just about anything that touches her skin sets her off and we've been trying to find products to work with her...so to speak. what else could you tell me? |

We use shaklee cleaning products. They are very good cleaners, and earth/creature friendly.
I could go on and on about how much we like this company. We use these throughout the house and I don't have to worry about my son getting toxins into his system; We also use these on our boat.
My husband's famous story is one time working on sanding his boat in a boat yard his sanding bag come off and all the blue paint powder from our boat got swept by the wind onto the bright white boat next to him. Well, the professional cleaning crew at the yard quoted the price at more than $1000.00 and a couple days to clean the white boat and they'd be using harsh chemicals which would require the boat to be re-waxed (all at my husband's expense since it was his blue paint that got all over the boat in the first place). So my husband asks the boat owner if he could clean it himself; the owner agreed, dh used shaklee cleaners and in a couple hours the boat was sparkling and didn't need re-waxed!
