I bought a comforter a few years ago at Target that I love. It's Woolrich, microfiber, I believe, and is very lightweight. I washed it a couple of weeks ago and put it in the dryer. It wasn't dry after the first cycle so put it in again. Unfortunately, I forgot to check on it after that and three days later or so, when I opened the dryer, the comforter and the dryer STUNK!!!! I washed it again, this time adding white vinegar to the cold water and then hung it outside on the fence. Alas, it STILL stinks. Sigh. I love this comforter and hate to dump it, but it just has that low key foul smell to it...
Any suggestions?

DS did this with a comforter once when his puppy had an accident on his bed and he didn't tell me about it. AFter we rewashed the comforter with vinegar and lots of soap, I put it in a large plastic bag with a newspaper, which I put in a smaller Wal-Mart bag and left open (I put it in the bag so the newsprint didn't rub off on the comforter). I had read somewhere that newspaper absorbs odor. It worked like a charm!

White vinegar is the very best thing to use for mildew. Not even Clorox will kill what vinegar can. I think I would try soaking the comforter in the washing machine with lots of vinegar in the water -- maybe an hour or so -- then add soap, then run the cycle. You can also put straight vinegar in the fabric softener cup (fill 'er up!) for additional freshening (and some softening, too) in the rinse cycle. I agree that drying the comforter on the line on a sunny day beats using the dryer. |

I wreck my washes all the time, just plain forget about them, too freaking busy!!! I am just a ding bat most of the time!!! Just wash it a bunch with plenty of water in the load, and twice the amount of soap neccessary and fabric softener!!! It will work out the smell!! I did this to our down comforter, too. Washed it dryed it, dryed it again, went on vacation!!! The house smelled rotten when we got home. My husband was ready to vomit! Just wash it and wash it and do not be afraid of detergent and fabric softener. |

Clorox 2 seems to work on my mildew clothes I forget! :) I like greased lightning too for stains and for pre-treating laundry or on the carpet when I shampoo! |

You might also try mixing up a teatree and water mix in a spray bottle and test in a hidden spot to make sure it doesn't stain or remove color. I would then spray the whole thing real good, let it set for a few hours, and then wash again with a vinegar rinse. Teatree is supposed to get rid of mildew and mold.
That's what I would try.

Might try spraying it with linen water when you bring it in from the "sun bath". Not a fun or cheap idea, but you may have to take it to a drycleaner...better than tossing it if all else fails.

I would wash it in very hot water with vinegar in both wash and rinse water and then hang it outside on a very hot day. I think you probably have a little bit of mildew growing in there so you need to kill off the mildew spores. I have had this happen and sometimes it can take several washes to really get the smell out.
