My daughter and I are going to try our first batch of soap this weekend. Missy has a question and I told her I would ask the experts here. We have recipes that call for certain amounts of EO or FO. If we want to add our own scents how do know how much to put in? The same amounts that recipe calls for or according to how strong we want the scent?

I would use 8 oz of EO or FO, or a blend of the two, for a 12 lb batch as long as you're not counting the water in the weight.

I cut full sized bars in half this afternoon, took them to the canopy swing at the stone fireplace, tiny labels in hand, and made them into mini bars to give away as samples. I didn't use enough lemongrass oil and the scent faded. When the bar is wet it smells nice but it's uninviting on a shelf. I will hand them out to customers at farmers market next week. They're really cute!

I never seem to use enough, at least that's want my husband says.
I usually only us a 1 to 2 oz per 12 lb batch.
Here's a site to check, might help.

General rule of thumb for as long as I've made soap (11 years) is .7 oz of scent oil per pound of base oil. Citrus scents bump up to 1 oz and strong ones like mint can go down to .5 oz.
