Posted - Aug 12 2010 : 07:22:59 AM Hi ladies! I'm so glad to see the thread still going strong! I'm sorry I haven't been here lately I started this and then dropped off the radar. Well I'm back and I think I'm ready to make a go of the weight loss(again). What is it about being post menopausal and yo-yoing like crazy? I crave salty junk lately and binge then get mad with myself. I know the first step is getting the junk OUT OF THE HOUSE! Then I think that the boys like it but, I know that they don't need it either, so getting rid of it would benifit all of us. The fruits and veggies are so good right now I think I'll get more of them into the house this week and dump the junk maybe I'll even get out and take walk today! Let's see how it goes.

Posted - Aug 09 2010 : 1:58:59 PM I am having lots of trouble! I need to lose 10-15 and be in a swimsuit by January 4th. My son is getting married in Jamaica. We are not sure we can swing it $$$$ wise but I sure don't want to get there and be at my currant weight. I am postmenopausal and my weight issues can with the menopausal hormone change. It's all belly fat. I can not eat a ton of raw vegtables because of colitus. Working out I swear makes me bigger and lightheaded. I'm thinking low blood sugar but mny doctor tells me I'm nuts. I am presently taking in about 20 grams of fiber a day but then I am not hungery and that is not good. Oh any words of advice for use older women? Thanks. Off to the Y to walk. Thank Goodness for a free membership.

Posted - Aug 07 2010 : 7:34:21 PM That sounds like a great idea Lyn! I'm determined to start getting up earlier in the mornings since the kids are going back to school this next Wednesday. If I get up early enough I can either do some light exercise or walk around the City Lake a couple of times before I have to get them up and going.

Posted - Aug 07 2010 : 6:14:53 PM OOOOOh! I want to join in too!! I am warming up to starting up again with losing weight. Now that I see there's a thread here, I'd rather do it with you farmgirls. I'm a Weight Watcher Lifetimer flunkie. I have 30 to lose this time. Just talked to a farmgirl friend & we're going to chisel out a couple days a week to walk together. I also am in Taekwondo twice a week- except I'm on hiatus for August. Once I started changing my lifestyle to organic, whole foods, it was hard going to the WW meetings & listening to all the promoting of fat-free & artificially sweetened foods. My goal is to totally ban processed, chemicalized foods. What if we were to focus on a "minutes of exercise" challenge? Tomorrow starts a new week; we can do a 90 minutes of exercise for the week...that's 30 minutes/3x this week. If you do more than 90 minutes, you rock! Anybody interested?

Posted - Aug 07 2010 : 5:53:15 PM Ooooo Can I join in with you ladies? I am so frustrated with my weight and was thinking that having some farmgirl motivation and support would be a big help!
Before my kiddos came along I was very thin. I did drop the weight after my first two and then the third one came along and I was very unhappy in my marriage and depressed and just didn't care if I ever got the weight off again. So I have been over weight for the last 8 years. My bad eating habits have rubbed off on my kids too.
I would love to find some good, easy recipes for wholesome, healthy meals that my whole family will eat.
I'm doing better on getting active, not so much exercise, but not sitting on my rump. Since the move there's a lot to be done to the new house. I have a much larger yard to take care of and the city doesn't mow the alley often enough to suit me so I've been mowing that too. Plus our repairs to the house and sorting junk. It's not really a workout but it keeps me out of the kitchen. My worst thing- I like foods that are fast and easy. If you ladies could suggest some quick healthy snacks I could make up and have ready to grab, that would be awesome! And my honey man bought a Wii. I'm not much of a video gamer, but I really like the sports games. We've been thinking about getting the Wii Fitness board. Do any of you use the Wii for exercise/weightloss? Have you seen any results?

Posted - Aug 07 2010 : 2:04:45 PM My Dr. Told me to lower my cholesterol and triglycerides, and since May, having cut out foods that will raise my numbers and adding in foods with good oils like avocado, olive oil and almonds, I have lost 26 lbs. I am unable to work out due to severe arthritis, but I watch my calories sugar intake and portion size. I eat carbs but I rarely have red meat, and eat fish chicken and go totally meatless at least twice a week. Portion size, and daily caloric intake, that's the key for me.

Posted - Aug 07 2010 : 12:47:50 PM Let's put our "farmgirl" noggins together and try to come up with farmgirl suggestions. We don't get enough exercise in our lives these days. Much as I hate "artificial" exercise in the gym, it's a reality these days. But I still try to come up with creative ways to exercise, such as doing barn work where my horses are, pulling weeds, yard work. Several Amish communities near me and you only see some of the older ladies overweight, no one else is. They get so much physical activity--not that I want to live that life, but it's something to think about.
Much as I hate it, I have to write down my food and plan. Maybe someday I can do without that, but for now I know I need to do it. I met with a dietician recently and that was helpful. Check your health insurance plans--I didn't realize mine included dietician consults and I'm also joining a program at a hospital this month that is covered by my insurance.
I've done weight watchers off and on over the years and I can't stand counting those points. I did some research and found that it's questionable if that point system really works and if it's really a healthy way to eat anyway. I've known people who have done nutrisystem and had serious blood pressure issues from all the sodium, and they all gained back their weight.
Everyone is different and what works for one person may not for another. For me, I'm just trying to generally incorporate healthy, real food, stay away from processed and junk food, no fast food, and increase my physical activity. Oprah said once that if there was a magic pill or solution, she'd have bought it long ago. No matter what any of the books say, it's hard work to be healthy and there's no getting around that.
How about some creative "farmgirl" ideas for exercise????

Posted - Aug 01 2010 : 3:27:14 PM I have been doing weight watchers since April and have lost 15 lbs and reached my goal this past week. I didn't go into it worrying about losing a lot of weight, I just wanted to learn to eat healthier. I find this is easier than counting calories and I agree with Christy the online tools do make it very easy to do.

Posted - Jun 18 2010 : 06:38:01 AM Well, my plans went down the tubes. I had been having pain in my lower left leg for a while but wouldn't quit until I did my WW 5K walk challenge. The doctor has now taken me off all unnecessary walking, stair climbing, etc., for 3 weeks and put me on steroid therapy. I am so BUMMED. My DH keeps telling me it's okay and not to worry, but this just sitting around drives me nuts! I can read and knit and stuff, but I want to get up and DO stuff. I'm also afraid that being that much less active and the steroids on top of that are not going to be doing me any good. One of the gals at WW dropped out because she developed a condition that requires steroids on a regular basis and it just puffed her up really badly.
I tend to gain weight in my gut and belly and I know that is a bad place for fat. DH is skinny as a rail. I went through working 60 hours a week, thyroid slow down, stress, quit smoking and menopause all at the same time. Put on 50 pounds in a year. The doctor at VA told me I just need to quit eating. This is just getting a little frustrating. I am on thyroid medication and HRT (bioidenticals) but the steroids will interfere with this somewhat too.
Any advice, ladies?

Posted - Jun 11 2010 : 05:24:10 AM I have been having trouble with weight for about 100 years. Due to chemicals and hormone changes mostly. I don't drink enough water.....its hard to do....to stop and drink. Course, then you have to pee all the time. I am very over weight but thankfully still have curves so it doesn't look as bad as it could. I am working on it but have not lost a pd. frustrating = Miss Kris

Posted - Jun 04 2010 : 5:55:56 PM Thanks Tami, He is very stubborn but this IS going to be the LAST TIME he neglects taking his meds, if I have to stand there and feed it to him. I can't go thru that again. I was in bed, he came in I thought he wanted to tell me something and suddenly his body stiffened and down he went! He has had others over the past seven years but this was the first time I witnessed the whole thing. Liz |

Posted - Jun 03 2010 : 1:13:45 PM Re: changing sizes. I've been thinking about this alot lately when I was looking at older sewing patterns and looking at my Mom's 1940's clothes marked size 10. The size 10s that she wore in the 1950s look like a size 4 now. Actually, ready made clothing is much larger than it used to be. I was so curious I searched a little for the information. For instance, until about 1956 a size 12 pattern was for a 30" bust. In 1956 it changed to a 32 inch bust. In 1967 the standard changed again to 34 inch bust. That's for sewing patterns. But I checked a few catalogs to get the measurements for ready made clothes - Size 12 is now for a 38 1/2 " bust. Yikes !!! I need to go take a walk! |

Posted - Jun 03 2010 : 12:09:25 PM I've been doing Weight Watchers but it's gotten to the point that they're making me crazy. I'm 5'9" and weight between 170 and 175. The doctor says I'm fine, but according to all of the charts, I need to lose about 20 or more pounds. Anyway, just about all I hear is how everybody takes a day or 2 and plans every meal for the week and when they'll work out and how much -- blah, blah, blah. I feel like, "Don't you have a life?" I realize that somebody who is really medically obese might need to do this, but I just don't have the patience or whatever. I'm about to quit them. I do exercise - DH and I walk a bit and I walk at lunch time and I've started a Zumba class at the gym I already have a membership to. One of the girls I work with is big into health food and healthy eating, so I'm going to pay more attention to her eating habits and see if anything she does can help.
I also swear that a size 14 now is smaller than it was 20 years ago. I personally think it's a conpsiracy :) I just don't want to end up like my mom. I am definitely more active than she was and hope to stay that way, so that should help a lot.
See what I can to do help this challenge out.

Posted - Jun 03 2010 : 07:39:18 AM I got in my walk yesterday about 45 mins. I also park and walk from the farthest distance too. I have taken to weighing my food my eating is portion control or lack there of. I also pulled out a pair of pants that I just had to save and they now fit. I at one point accepted my 181 pounds as me and got rid of my smaller clothes except for a few odd things that I just loved. So out came the pants and they fit.
Out of style but they fit.
