Does your family do Family reunions?

My maternal side of my family likes to get together in the summers towards the end of July and beginning of August. My grandparents live in Laramie, Wy which is just a stone's throw from Cheyenne. Each year, Cheyenne puts on "Frontier Days" which is a huge extravaganza including a rodeo, carnival, concerts and PBR.

Our family tries to get together, do a couple family picnics, and attend at least one day of Frontier Days. I have so many wonderful memories of huddling together for warmth one year, and trying to fan ourselves to prevent heat stroke the next! The kiddos all love to run and play together and I can't help to think that these are going to create some priceless bonds and even more priceless memories.

My grandmother's side of the family does a family reunion every year. There were 13 kids in that family so it's a pretty big family. We usually meet for a buffet lunch in a shelter house in a park in the city closest to the old family farm. It keeps getting bigger every year. We've done a lot of different things over the years for entertainment. One of my great-uncles used to buy rubber balls for every kid in the family. We used to take up a collection to finance the next year's ham and supplies, but lately we've been doing a "white elephant" auction which usually brings in more than enough for the next year's party. We rotate the chairperson every year.

My husband's family has a reunion which we host at our farm in Michigan once every five-ten years. It is a pretty big deal, people come from all over the country. We invite people to camp on the farm but most stay in hotels 15-20 miles away. My husband plants sweet corn specifically for the party, and lets everyone help shuck corn. We boil the corn in one of the old kettles used on the old farm for butchering. He takes everyone on hayrides using Grandpa's old tractors, and everyone gets to take a ride in "Maybelline", Grandpa's old truck. Yesterday I "stocked" the pond with 200 bluegills, some perch, and catfish so the grandkids can go fishing. (hope they live!) We buy straw bales for seating and we haven't really decided on this year's menu yet, but are thinking a hog roast might be good. Maybe the green beans I planted yesterday will be ready and we can give everyone a snappy experience!

You shall eat the fruit of the labor of your hands - You shall be happy and it shall be well with you. -Psalm 128.2

Until the summer she died, my great grandma (mammaw to us) made at least ten quilt tops every year. SHe would always announce that we all needed to learn how too because she wouldbe gone soon enough

Anyway, my great-aunt made her first quilt the year Mammaw died and wrote a poem of sorts to go with it. She wrote about all of the quilts her mom had made over the years. The funniest part was when she told about a blue dress that was handed down through the sisters that she hated. She knew that by the time it got to her--the baby--it would be even uglier than it was ten years earlier on the firstborn.

Then, once she grew out of it...you guessed it, Mammaw made her a new quilt for her bed that included scraps from the hated dress She said she was stuck with the dress until her youngest was in high school and they could finally buy a bedding set--but she still has the quilt, of course.

In any case, I never won a quilt , but I have one from my great-great grandmother that I treasure (and one from my other great-gramdma (Ma)).

Yeah, we have a Quilt Raffle! It is a big deal every year!! Everyone wants the quilt!! They are always so beautiful! I haven't won yet, maybe this year will be my year!!(fingers crossed!) We also hold a Family Auction--where everyone brings items like canned jellies and veggies, aprons, homemade items, etc. and everyone has paddles, like in a real aucion with a number on it, and they bid! Highest bidder gets the item. My Cousin is the auctioneer and we laugh and have a great time out bidding eachother!! All the money made on the Quilt Raffle and Auction goes into covering the cost for the next year!! We also nominate an 'Old Gray Mare' and an 'Old Gray Mule' each year. The crown and robe gets past to the new winner!! They have to parade around and it is quite funny!!

I am actually trying to plan one right now for next Spring. I don't know if everyone is willing to come to Texas, but I am going to try my best. We had always travelled home and it's their turn to come to us. I think it would be so much fun and I am trying to plan it as a suprise for Scott's return home.

We have a huge one every year, my extended family is very large. My great-grandparents had 9 children and each of them had at least 5--then their children and children's children. There's a lot of us, and usually 100 to 150 people make it to the party.

We rotate it from house to house every year. We have a raffle where people bring homemade things from home and the proceeds go to fund the next reunion. Plus, everyone pays $10 to cover food. It is a great time and people come from all over--and the food is amazing. Heavy on the desserts, of course!

We have a big family reunion every year the first weekend in July. It is my Mom's side of the family. It is a quite large group, my mom is 1 of 5 kids and her dad is 1 of 6 kids. We have it at the same place every year..a rustic Baptist camp. Every year is a different theme. One year was Mexican Fiesta, Cowboy roundup, Tropical Luau, Pirate's Treasure...you get the idea. We plan games, events, decorating around the theme. On Sat night we have a talent hour where the kids and grown up too sing, dance, and put on a play, etc. I have a very musical family so we breakout the banjoes and guitars and play bluegrass. It is an awesome time and all the kids look forward to it all year!!

Actually, we are having our annual family reunion today! My dads family has done this since all of his brothers and sister got married. Now we have four generations that attend. We have added tons of kiddos to the group and new wives and hubbys and new girlfriends and boyfriends and brand new babies...we really have a big group. We have always had it out on my mom and dads ten acre homestead and mom is ussually the one preparing for everything, cooking, cleaning, etc..but this year they switched it up to be held at an uncles house so it should be alot of fun for mom to be able to be on the INSIDE this year. She'll get to visit alot more and won't be obligated to help with the cleanup and stuff. This year we are going to miss my two older brothers who where not able to make it. One live sin Lubbock TX and his family just traveled down to LA for my sisters wedding in April so it's not really convienient to make another trip so soon. My Oldest brother lives in Kansas and his wife is recovering from surgery and also is on bed rest due to her preganacy so we'll miss that part of our family. But we always have a nice time, no matter how many or how few are able ot be there.

Fresh and creative projects popping up on my blog daily! Stop by and check out what I'm up to today!

We just started doing family reunions about five years ago, and they have truly been wonderful! My cousin puts in a ton of work and does a beautiful job of putting them together. They're very low-key, usually just a barbecue or pig roast, but it's so nice to see everyone. We're the "northern" part of the family, so we don't get to see them very often!

I would love to have family reunions, but 1/2 of my family lives in Germany, and until 8 months ago my mom, sister & my hubbies family, we all lived in the same neighboring towns,,,so weekends were "reunions" lol!
I did have the good opportunity to take DH back to Germany, to meet up with my family & family(childhood)friends. It was awesome!
At the last big Quilt show here in Spokane, there was a great quilt made from the 'Photo T-shirts' from the same family, but from like 10years worth of reunions. It was awesome to see the people in the photo t-shirts & great that the quilter had the foresight to preserve those reunions(via t-shirts)in a wonderful quilt.
When you come from a very small family (like mine)it makes for a small reunion,,,it's hard to get enough people together to fit into a VW ! lol!
