Howdy
looking for north idaho farmgirls who want to learn mountain dulcimer or the fiddle. We can barter for lessons, or I'll teach for free. I play appalachian style. And i promise you can learn if you can find a fiddle and show up!

man, i need to be online more on the weekends! okay, pam in post falls this is really really casual stuff im talking about. Like just showing up at my farm or some public place, making coffee, having a slice of pie and learning to play. You don't need a fancy 300 dollar instrument. I bet my fiddle isn't worth 50 bucks, but all you do need is the right kind of attitude and a sense of humor. but if you email me personally we can work something out. I'll happily do a group weekend too. I might have a fiddle fest fall weekend up at thefarm for brand new fiddle players, it can be a potluck.

and faith, there are mountain (lap) dulcimers and there are hammered dulcimers (big old things on stands played with mallets), sounds like you have a mountain!

My mom has a dulcimer, but I've have no idea if it's the same 'mountain dulcimer' you're talking about...are there different types of dulcimers? Hers is an elongated hourglass shape and you lay it flat across your lap to play it...
She may be interested in your offer, if the instruments are the same...

I'll take a picture of the psaltry and post it this weekend. It's a little unusual looking. I bought it at a local dulcimer festival in June. Haunting sound--I love it!

Oh Jenna...I have wanted to do this for so long. Just needed someone to teach me. I am in Post Falls. Are you wanting to do group lessons or individual? I do not have an instrument...but will see if I can find one. I know nothing about buying one...what do I look for? I am interested in the fiddle, but dulcimer sounds good too.
Look forward to hearing from you.

Jenna, I guess it might be around a 3 hour trip. Mapquest or Yahoo take you way down to Deer Park and up which I think is longer so grab a map--Sandpoint to Newport Wa then up to Usk turn west over Flowery Trail Road which goes to the ski resort 49 Degrees, end up in Chewelah go north to Colville go over Sherman Pass to Republic. It's a absoulutely beautiful drive. You go over two mountain passes over some curvey roads but it's beautiful. There are three motels in Republic and some nice campgrounds that are usually empty. hey all,

anyone who wants to come over and play and learn teh fiddle you are welcome. I am not a pro, by any means, but I love helping people get started making music for themselves.

JoAnn,

Man i would love to see that, i don't think i have the grit to compete just yet! maybe next year? I'll check out that site for sure, how far is it from North Idaho?

Kathy!

I just orderd an 11-string bowed psatlry from a little store in the smokies called wood-n-strings! You're a musician after my own heart!

sherri,

what book did you get? The first time i tried to teach myself i gave up because my book was way to technical and cold and horrid. But check out nativeground music, they have amazing beginner stuff. top shelf.

Jenna - I live in Washington, have a cabin in Montana and I bought a fiddle last year. I have been trying to teach myself with a book, but it's tough. Is this an offer for just right now, or a standing offer. I am stuck in Washington until after I do the state fair, but after that, I could go get my fiddle and come on by.

Oh, Jenna, I just got a bowed psaltry too! I love how it sounds-now to practice, practice. Then it's a toss up whether to play my mountain dulcimer or my bowed psaltry!

I also got a secondhand hammered dulcimer, but I've just plunked around on it so far. I need to take a couple lessons or go to a workshop to get going on this. I love bluegrass & mountain music!

Jenna, Being a fiddler do you know of the Fiddle contest over in Republic WA this weekend? Here's the link www.washingtonopenfiddlecontest.com. Also we have a growing bluegrass interest in Colville. You missed the big jam weekend over the fourth but check out this link. www.colvillebluegrass.com
The monthly jams are not held in the summer months but they start again in the fall. Also if you go on 7000 foot climbs you should check out Maryjanes Outpost chat group it's www.maryjanesoutpost.com/dispatch/. I also read on your blog that you make the "churned" butter that Maryjane has in her book. We do that too. Don't have access to a local dairy and I found that "ultra pasteurized" doesn't work. I found a organic brand that works great. We usually make waffles or pancakes with whatever berries we have in the freezer at the time.

I have a fiddle and boy do I need help...well, I suppose if I played the darn thing once in awhile I would improve but I am just so busy and it is so discouraging to pick it up once every two or three weeks and sound like a 4th grader with a screechy bow!

Alee, shucks. You certainly don't need anything fancy. I bought my fiddle off ebay for 20 dollars and it plays just fine, but if you ever want to dive into learning. I'll gladly help

Oh that would be so much fun! Someday if I ever can find a fiddle that I can afford I will have to take you up on the offer!
