I hope this hasn't been discussed before. I joined last year and finally found a red hat (antique) today for $10. Its been an absolute riot to be with older ladies having fun.

Anyone?

Well, just browsing on MJF site and found Red Hat mention.......

I have been a Red Hatter for 4 years now, formed my own chapter here and we have alot of fun...Teas,luncheons,games nights....we keep "growing in our membership (22 in my group now....) and we formed a group at the local Senior center and 25 lovely Red Hatted women showed up the first days.....Its a fun way for us ladies 50+ to enjoy ourselves and still remain "ladies"....

Hmmm, I've always thought the Red Hats would be fun. I remember well the poem about the woman who said when she is old she'll wear purple with a red hat which doesn't go. It's a sweet poem.

This one is very similar, and very dear to my heart because I *so* love my horses and animals. It's also called "When I Am Old," but the author is unknown.

When I Am Old

When I am Old
I shall wear diamonds
And a wide brimmed straw hat
With silver and leather on it
and I shall spend my social security
On white wine and carrots
And sit in the alley of my barn
And listen to my horses breathe.
I will sneak out in the middle of a summer's night
And ride the sorrel colt
Across the moonstruck meadow.
If my old bones will allow.
And when people come to call I will smile and nod.
As I walk them past the gardens to the barn
And show, instead, the beauty growing here
In stalls fresh-lined with straw.
I will learn to shovel and sweat and
Wear hay in my hair as if it were a jewel.
And I will be an embarrassment to all
Who look down on me.
Who have not yet found the peace in being free
To love a horse as a friend,
A friend who waits at midnight hour
With muzzle and nicker and patient eyes
For the kind of woman I will be
When I am Old.

I belong to the "Red Hat Antiquers" in Covington, GA and we have a blast! Once a month we get together to have dinner out or at someone's home. We can buy raffle tickets (3/$1.) and over the past year & a half I've won 4 red hats, lots of teddy bears, gee-gaws and fun junk. We have something like 50-60 members, but only about a third attend the meetings at a time.

Our group started at an antique mall and I found out about them while shopping there. I have a disabled son and he usually goes with me to have dinner. Everyone loves to have him, and never fail to ask about him when I see them around town. He said it's like being in a room of Aunts & Grandmas!! He sits and plays his Nintendo and enjoys seeing all the old ladies giggling and acting like young girls again!

Ha! What a great name, Jan - get it registered quick before someone else thinks of it!

I was having some power surges/hot flashes today and my sister emailed this little mid-life funny:

I have "The Red Hat Society-Fun and Friendship After Fifty" by founder and Queen Mother Sue Ellen Cooper..It is very interesting about how they all began-and funny tooo..It reminds us to not dread turning 50...But rejoice in a new chapter of your life...I am thinking my group should/would be "The Red Hot-Flashes"~~~What do ya think?

Hi Karen,

I'm not sure if Amazon.com has the Quiet Book. I got it when Ms. Bailey came to town and did a workshop at the local yarn store.

She has a website you can order from directly and she ships VERY promptly.

Hello Ladies (Lucinda, Jan, etc.) ~ Thanks for the comments...

FYI - the Red Hats have a virtual chapter online called "Ruby's Ramblers" that you might enjoy. I don't get connected to the internet but once a week or so (we don't have access at our ranch) and the virtual chapter a stress-free way to play. Plus their website is chock full of goodies. Like you, my local chapters are either closed or too far away as well, so just like you I'll be starting my own chapter soon - my son is already calling me his "Queen Mum"....goodness, that's sooooo easy to get used to!

x, Karen

ps: I'm checking Amazon for the "...Quiet Book" today - it sounds too playful to pass up!

I don't qualify yet (but soon!). My mom belong's and I recently gave her a pattern for and "Old Ladies Quiet Book" by Eleanor Peace Bailey. She and her friends LOVE it. Such a lot of giggling was heard as they assembled their books with a place for their reading glass, a hankie tucked into soft sculptured cleavage, etc.

I think it is a wonderful way for women to get together and be, well, girls

Hello CountryMamma ~
I donned my red hat this April and have delighted in the fun and support of the entire group. There was so much I didn't know (like all the time I missed when I could have been a Pink Hat...). My son and I were at Sacramento airport recently and I noticed an older gal, looking blue, but wearing a red straw cowboy hat. I smiled at her and mentioned the code sentence, "Red Hatters matter!" and she threw her arms around me. After a good hug she mentioned that she was from Dallas and was lost. We helped her to the proper gate and with another big hug - and a big smile now - she happily boarded her plane.

I'm getting the same feeling of support with the Farmgirl chapters - I'm sending for a packet today...

You've got me wondering what your antique red hat looks like...

Smiles to you,
Karen (Gypsy Heart)
