Posted - Sep 09 2025 : 09:01:49 AM I'm starting a new thread. We can share what we are baking, sewing, planting, or prepping. Autumn begins the 22nd. The month of August flew by and although I prepped something for freezer/pantry almost daily, I feel there is much more to do. I don't sew or knit. but a warm yummy knitted sweater would be a need for winter. I am planting Autumn crops-broccoli, kale, brussels sprouts, pole beans, sugar snaps and carrots. I am waiting for a very GOOD sale on winter squash(pests took out my plants) I need more soil for raised beds and straw to keep them warm. What are you doing to get ready for next season?

Freeze warning tonight. This is too early! I'll do something with the green peppers. 15 pounds worth. Grateful for the blessings from the garden.

Posted - Oct 21 2025 : 08:36:26 AM Tara, I have an order in for chicken wings to be delivered today if the store has them in stock. I seldom cook a whole chicken, so I like chicken wings for broth. Hope to make the broth today and can in the morning. If my energy holds out I will make the broth today but if not I will do it tomorrow and can the next day. I always have a plan B ready to go. Occasionally I may need a plan C.

Posted - Oct 21 2025 : 07:33:19 AM Made a large batch of chicken broth is slow cooker. 12 cups into freezer. I cook veggie soup for lunch 3-4 days a week in the colder months. A lot of stock needed. Some of the tomato cuttings are not suckers. I wanted to try rooting as many cuttings as possible. I have the cuttings in warm water and place on top of my freezer. The top of the freezer stays warm. And my cats can't reach the plants.
Lisa, I have heard planting a whole cherry tomato and placing it in a sunny window will give same result. I planted a whole cherry tomato as an experiment. Sara, try this next year. Have you cut tomato trims and placed in dirt to try to grow more fruit? I can't throw away the trimmings, I feel they could give me more fruit.

Posted - Oct 20 2025 : 1:47:35 PM Wow Tara, that is really neat. I have never heard of that before. I will have to give that a try with my tomato plants next year.

Posted - Oct 19 2025 : 12:12:44 PM I've seen where the Amish slice a tomato, lay the slice flat in a pot with soil, and put in a cool place like a crawl space. The seeds produce tiny plants that can be planted in the spring. I don't have a basement or crawl space, or I might try this. I did try overwintering some pepper plants once. They looked ok for a while but then gave up the ghost. Never thought of putting in water. I have several plants in the garden right now with flowers on them, so I may try this. I am currently trying to root a bunch of coleus and wandering jews in water to save for next year. |

Posted - Oct 19 2025 : 08:31:30 AM Thanks Tara for sharing with us how you root tomato plants in water then plant in soil. I'm learning something new from farmgirls all the time, thanks to all.

Posted - Oct 19 2025 : 07:33:59 AM Once the tomato branches have good root system, I plant in foxfarm soil. The peppers are cut down, all leaves cut off and planted in a well draining soil. I tend to over water the pepper plants and they perish. The plants need high light and warmth. My tiny laundry room stays toasty all winter and I can open door for natural light.

Posted - Oct 18 2025 : 5:36:38 PM Heather, hope you feel better soon Sylvia, you can at least plan next years garden? My husband asked me to decide the garden layout and then he can make plans for permanent fence. I planted garlic today

Not really a stocking item. But having the tomato plants to over winter gives me a head start for 20206. Anyone over winter tomato plants? I'll try overwintering pepper plants, but haven't been successful

Posted - Oct 15 2025 : 1:26:32 PM Stacked up a bunch of firewood and now have poison something or other on my wrists. UGH! I really need to learn my poisons LOL! I thought long sleeves and gloves was good enough protection. Guess I was wrong :)

Posted - Oct 14 2025 : 12:57:25 PM I have already ordered some seeds. Couldn't find them this last season. Hybrids, so I can't save those seeds. Already looking forward to gardening. I'm going to have a long winter, huh?

Posted - Oct 14 2025 : 12:20:31 PM I have a couple of weeks yet before I plant the garlic, but need to harvest the carrots next week for sure. Not sure if I am going to can them or freeze them at this point.

Posted - Oct 13 2025 : 1:59:19 PM I finished collecting and canning the beets and banana peppers over the weekend. I also picked and canned some green beans. I am not sure if that was the last of the green beans or if there will be more. But my garden is finally winding down.

Posted - Oct 07 2025 : 04:40:28 AM About time to plant garlic for me. I usually plant sometime around October 12. I saved the best bulbs for planting. Will do that sometime this week. Now that the weather has cooled down I will get started on cutting wood. I asked my boys to come and help, and they will on Sunday. I know 2 are coming and hopefully the oldest one will too. His kids are bigger, lol. Grandkids are 16-3 years old. we have a bunch of dead elm that they can cut down for me, then I can go out and cut away as I feel like it. My husbands back is bad right now, so will do what I can. We did get second crop all baled and hauled, so that is done. Happy Fall.

Posted - Oct 06 2025 : 12:14:30 PM I'm planning to can some tomato soup on a rainy Tuesday (tomorrow) LOL!
I've been collecting seeds from the beans, sunflowers, peppers, and ... I'm not sure what else is there without looking. I've gotten jackets washed and ready too. Mostly we've been doing the outside farm stuff rather than garden and house stuff.
Jeanette - I'm going to plant some wheat seed soon in the garden and then till it under in the spring.

Posted - Oct 03 2025 : 4:47:39 PM The past few days a constant breeze. A good time to get all the winter blankets and fleece jackets washed. The sunshine and the breeze dried all. Take freezer inventory to be sure of what we have and need.

Posted - Oct 03 2025 : 4:42:12 PM Jeanette, good food all winter for you. I haven't tried a crop cover. I'm in SC and sweet allysum blooms most of the winter. This year and part of next I'll leave beds covered with leaves and no plants Krista, best to can the beans to enjoy all winter
I picked about 2 pounds of sweet peppers. I roasted some with dinner-very tasty! I have stuffed a dozen Marconi/Pablano with a sausage, and herb mixture. I'm thinking I will slice rest to freeze. I should have a few more Marconi to diced for future pizza topping.

Posted - Oct 02 2025 : 8:56:18 PM I love reading about all of your harvest preparations. I have been juicing, dehydrating and freeze drying. This year the zuchinnis are HUGE and my cucumbers were trying to compete. It has been a good year with beans, tomatoes, pumpkins, swiss chard, beets, spaghetti squash and corn. The carrots are just not growing though. I have never had no success
I am looking at planting winter crops to replenish the nutrients in the soil. Has anyone done that before?
