Posted - Dec 30 2021 : 1:15:50 PM I'm cooking black-eyed peas with salt pork and cornbread tomorrow. Black-eyed peas for luck. What's your New Year's tradition?

Posted - Jan 01 2022 : 12:28:14 PM I will be cooking black eyed peas, in a little bit of pepper bacon, along with some sautéed Kale and roasted Turkey wings. There will also be a small batch of cornbread to go along with dinner as well.
Jean, black eyed peas are a southern thing and you live in the Pacific NW so the myth of bad luck doesn't apply out there. Are there any specific traditions out in your neck of the woods?

Posted - Dec 31 2021 : 09:05:13 AM I like sauerkraut but never had it for New Year. Black-eyed peas have a earthy taste. I eat a lot of dried beans and black-eyed peas are not in my top 10 favorites but they are good. I have heard that people outside of Texas and the south feed them to their cows.

Posted - Dec 31 2021 : 08:34:52 AM It's sauerkraut at my house. I'm not sure I've ever had a black eyed pea - are they as good as the green ones?

Posted - Dec 30 2021 : 5:18:30 PM Well, dang it all, we've checked everywhere this week, and there's not a black eyed pea to be had either dried or canned. I hope that doesn't doom me to bad luck all year. . . . yikes!!

Posted - Dec 30 2021 : 1:26:06 PM Diana, thanks for reminding me about mustard greens. I'll throw a handful or two of my dried mustard greens into the pot with the black-eyed peas. Greens and peas are good cooked together.
