For those of you who have read my endless babble about cooking (lack of) skills... well you get to read more.. lol!
My mom, coming from Germany with no formal education in the English language,, not to mention had to learn to convert from metric to the American measuring system.
So, one of the many fabulous recipes mom made was what is called 'Griesssuppe'.. it sounded like she was saying Grease soup...
Fast forward, I have slowly been trying to repeat her recipes into English.. problem is,, mom's notes to me were not your ordinary notes, in fact she recorded her recipes onto a recorder..
EX: to make Spetzle, mom said, "you make a mountain of flour on the table, then make a whole with your fist into the flour,, then add 2 egg and some water, then you mix it with your hand until it is a little sticky but not to much..." (you have to add in her German accent to fully appreciate her recording)...
But I have misplaced the cassette tape and now am trying to remember all the recipes so I can write them down to share.
So,, for the ''Grease Soup".. I had pretty much an idea of what ingredients I needed,, but not sure, I contacted my Uncle (her brother), my niece and my daughter nope, they did not have the written recipe.. I contacted my cousin Karl in Munich, nope,,, and Irmgard, she barely remembers it but did not know the recipe. So I contacted Jutta in Berlin,, she didn't know it.. but OMG! she searched and found it on an obscure Swabisch recipe site and found it.. as it turns out, it is a regional recipe..
So I an thrilled I now have it, along with moms Lentil, sausage & spectzle soup...
Mom is a 'Heilbronner'... also called a 'Swabisch girl' because of the region she is from.
So tomorrow I will be making the soup..
And am happy to add 2 more recipes to my "mom's best recipe book.. and yes, I will be sharing those recipes with family...
So never give up on those special family recipes....

Oh Nini that would be such a sweet thing to do for your mom...
My dad use to have a huge Reel to Reel, and recorded some of his favorite songs... but the tapes on the reels are brittle and we are afraid to play them.. but we know they are there... and in our memories...

Awesome, Gracie! And I love the memory you shared! Thank you! I really hope your tape pops up! What a treasure! I have one on it with my Dad's voice tucked away in our attic. It makes me tear up every time. I sure miss his voice. I also have a really cool 45 that my mother and godmother recorded in a booth at an amusement park when they were young teenagers... I mean... WOW! I haven't heard it in years. SO adorable... They were singing, "Dont You Just Know It" by Huey "Piano" Smith... I can still hear them singing "...Gooba Gooba Gooba Gooba.. Ah Ah Ah Ah.. Ah Ah Ah Ah... Ay Ay Ay-O.. Ay Ay Ay-O!" LOL! I wonder if she remembers? I'm going to have to get hold of a record player and record it for her... Maybe send her a copy for Christmas!! LOL!

What a great story! I hope you find the cassette tape. I have started putting family recipes together. My one grandmother, if you asked her for a recipe she would say I can give you the recipe but I don't follow it. Too much this or not enough of that. And it was all in her head. She didn't own a measuring cup, she always used a yellow coffee mug. I was talking to her sister-in-law a few years back and she told me my great-grandmother was the same way, she had her special coffee mug too. She would pull out a recipe and make adjustments from memory.

Oh, Grace! Nothing more special than family recipes! That soup looks wonderful! I stared a family history recipe album from relatives and added notes and photos! I have moments when I pull that album out and start making what ever comfort foods that I need that particular day. Family recipes are like a huge hug when you need it most!

Grace, this is a wonderful story of finding your Mom's special soup recipe!! It looks delicious and excited that your friend , am Deutschland, could track it down for you. I love Cream of Wheat cereal but only had it as a hot breakfast cereal. Your soup looks and sounds much more flavorful than breakfast cereal. Your Mutti would be pleased you kept digging until you found out the family favorite soup!!

I forgot to mention,, I used unsalted butter... and I used chicken bullion cubes to make the broth.

Whoot Whoot!
Well I made the soup... and even DH liked it....
I just made 1/2 the recipe.... add scrambled an egg into it..
It was Yummy! and brought back a flood of wonderful memories...
I am sure I can 'add' to it,, maybe some wurst/Weiss or brat,, some shredded spinash, sliced mushrooms.. what ever.. but for now, I am happy with it just the way my mutti made it.

Awwwww, Gracie, what a neat story. And what a fun experience you are having. I did a cookbook for my m-i-l a couple of years before she passed away. The family adored it. I have no more hard copies but will see if I can send you a digital copy. Here ya go Sherone,,
60 grams of (old fashion, not instant) cream of wheat..
30 grams of butter
1 - liter of broth, chicken, beef or veggie
some fine chopped parsley (opt) to sprinkle on top before serving.
salt & pepper to taste.
1. brown C.O wheat in melted butter..(unsalted)
2. add broth & boil for a few min stiring. then add egg..
3. then simmer for 15 min.
4. makes '4' 1c servings,, sprinkle parsley as a garnish.
only 165 cal per serving.
My mom use to crack an egg and gently mix it up into the soup.. for extra protein..
I will have to translate the grams into American measurements.
When cooking German food, I use the grams/Liters and when sewing I often use mm/cm and meters to get a more precise measurement.
I use a food scale for the grams..
so, 1 LT is about 4 + cups
30g is about about 1 + ounce
60g is about 2+ ounces
*the + means a bit more..
if you don't have a Food/Cooks Scale you will want one.. they are so invaluable..
I have a not expensive one,, and luv it.

Hi my dear friend Grace,
Oh I love this post so much!!! My grandmother was from Greece, and same thing with her recipes. I have been told I am the only one who makes her koulorakia the way she did. My mama cooks the same - you put this much in, a shake of this, etc. I find many of my own recipes are this way, too.
Anyway, loved this. Big hugs!

Great story and happy for your success. I have no family recipes. My mom was a wonderful cook---but she mostly just cooked vegetables and natural foods. She did make special dishes but Never really had any recipes. She could churn out super tasty meals though and so many people have told me how they loved her cooking.
