Posted - Aug 11 2020 : 8:37:36 PM Helloooooo Sisters! I'm in Heaven! It's Canning Season!
Have you girls ever seen the book, "Not Your Mama's Canning Book" by Rebecca Lindamood? Oh my GOSH, is it awesome! She shares unique canning recipes in the front of the book and then recipes with which to use them in the back! Cranberry Ketchup, Instant Hummus-In-A-Jar, Maple Bourbon Pecan Pie In A Jar.. Oh my, I am ADDICTED! She even has recipes for "herb bombs" and things like Chocolate Extract. Very, very cool, indeed!
I also recently picked up the book, "Naturally Sweet Food In Jars" by Marisa McClellan. It looks wonderful. I have really cut back on sugar and sweeteners in our diet, and love the idea of using natural sweeteners like maple, honey, fruit juices and agave nectar in my canning projects. I'm dying to try her Blueberry Butter, Sweet Corn Salsa, Dried Fig Preserves and Peach Salsa! YUM! She also has things like Fruitcake Conserve and Apple Date Chutney, which sound like they'd be LOVELY as holiday gifts!
What are some of your favorite canning books? Any favorite recipes to share or recommend?
Hugs -
Nini

Posted - Aug 15 2020 : 12:27:35 PM Sara! Omgosh! Those look like awesome canning books! I forgot... I totally love my Jackie Clay books! Must be losing my marbles! She is a canning goddess! Lol. I am going to look up your recommendations. Im already tempted by "Preserving Italy," and I was looking at "Mrs. Wheelbarrow" myself just the other day! Thank you!
Im doing a farmgirl giveaway right now that includes the "Not Your Mama's" book... I'll have to add the link here later, but please do check it out and sign up, girls!!
Lisa... If memory serves, YOU introduced me to Jackie Clay! She is just amazing!
Yep! Sara, I think our farmgirl sisters are the go-to resource for just about anything!!
Michele! The best cookbooks are those that end up falling apart, am I right? You cannot go wrong with the Ball Canning book... Everything turns out delicious! That rebel canning group... Is that the group of ladies who have YouTube Channels (i.e. Wilhelm's Kitchen, Sutton's Daze, The Kneady Homesteader, etc., etc.?)? If so, I watch them ALL the time! I LOVE them! But I dont do Facebook... Bummer! I'd love to hear about what you've learned from them sometime!!
Thanks so much for sharing! Im so excited to try some of these new books out!!
Hugs,
Nini

I did join the rebel canning group on facebook. They can everything, and alot i would not, but to each his own. Oh yes the canning season will be going in full force very soon. Potatoes are ready to dig, carrots, and tomatoes are starting.

Posted - Aug 12 2020 : 08:22:38 AM Lisa, Didn't know it was a contest - I would have kept digging. I learned about Jackie Clay from you.
Nina I've been looking at "Not Your Mama's Canning Book" and may take another look after your rave reviews.
Along with the canning books I have learned so much from the FarmGirls who post what they can and how. Canning dried beans without soaking is the biggy for me.

Posted - Aug 12 2020 : 05:15:46 AM Nini, you're talking to me. Never met a canning book I didn't like (want). Here's my canning library that is still growing every chance I get.
Gotta start with the Grandmamas of them all - Ball Blue Book and Kerr Home Canning Book 1952.
Preserving Italy - Domenica Marchetti Mrs Wheelbarrow's Practical Pantry - Cathy Barrow American Test Kitchen d.i.y. Cookbook Small Batch Preserving - Ellie Topp and Margaret Howard Growing & Canning Your Own Food - Jackie Clay Preserving Made at Home - Dick & James Strawbridge
The next two are canning magazines from the grocery store. BH&G Canning & preserving/freezing/drying - Summer 2015 Harris Farmer's Almanac Canning & Preserving - Summer 2017
The next two are chapters from Vintage cookbooks. The Victory Binding of the American Woman's Cookbook Wartime Edition 1944
Cookbook prepared by Home Bureau Ottawa, Illinois 1946
If I kept digging I might have come up with others but these are the ones I use and keep handy.
