Posted - Jun 29 2018 : 08:54:03 AM How wonderful. I just saw this post. I use to take care of calves who the mom rejected or wouldn't feed. The owners would bring them by to my place and I would bottle feed them. There was one calf who would not even take her bottle. The others did though. I would talk to all of my calves including this little stubborn one. It was a cold and misty day and into the night. The other 3 calves had already finished their bottles. Me talking to her---- told her that I would not leave her or her friends until she had her bottle. This pen I had them in was out in the open,so it was wet and cold. I did stay with her for over eight hours trying to get her to take the bottle. Talking all the time to her and staying by her side. She finally took her bottle and was doing so much better. After that we were bonded along with her friends that evertime I came outside they all had to talk to me. After they were old enough to tend to themselves the owners would come and get them.

Posted - Jun 15 2018 : 11:01:29 AM Winnie---go ahead and sign me up---I don't have a cow, but I love Mary Jane's books. When I was a little girl we would drive to my aunt's house once a week to buy milk and butter---it was so good. I loved to go there. It was a beautiful old two story farmhouse and she had lots of cats that I could pet. I was in hillbilly heaven for sure. My other cow memory is going with my grandfather to milk for a neighbor and he squirted milk in their cat's mouth and it drank and drank---so cute.

Posted - Jun 08 2018 : 2:26:49 PM All of these stories are wonderful!! There are so many of you who have had first hand experience with cows. I am pretty ignorant on this topic but I love the many delicious uses that miilk supply in cooking. I live in a city and MarjJane's explanation of how to have a backyard cow seemed so doable. It seemed so possible to do that I would have moved forward with it if it was legal in the city! Guess I better stick to making butter and other wonderful things to eat. Lately, I am hooked on buttermilk for cooking. Using many of the easy and yummy recipes in MaryJanés Cast Iron Cookbook (another must have if you love to cook), I love how buttermilk makes biscuits, rolls, pancakes all very tender and light. There is really a simple transformation using it I think.
I hope to hear more stories from Farmgirls about their cow experiences soon! Who out there would love to share and put your name in the hat for our giveaway?

Posted - Jun 04 2018 : 3:50:21 PM My uncle had a dairy farm when I was growing up. He had to bring the herd out on the road and around the block to the milk barn. I was 10 or 11 and they surprised me. I jumped in the car to get out of their way and shut the door on my big toe. Ouch!! But I loved to go into the milk barn and get fresh milk.

Posted - Jun 04 2018 : 11:09:18 AM This is great Winnie! I already have the book so don't sign me up, but I will be checking back to read everyone's stories.
I have a LOT of cow stories but my favorite one that still makes me laugh to this day is the time I rode a cow. My husband and I were getting the cows from the pasture for milking. Our cows are more like pets. They're very tame and friendly. My husband walked up to a cow and she didn't get up so he sat down and leaned on her. She still didn't get up so he actually sat on her like you would if you were riding a horse. She didn't move. Not to be outdone I picked a cow, walked up and sat down on top of her. She jumped up and took off running so fast I didn't even have time to get off. I must have pretty good balance because I make it all the way through the pasture and had time to debate if I should jump off in the dirt lot or see if she slowed down on the concrete. I chose the dirt. Unfortunately I lifted my leg in front of me to get off, rather than behind me, and ended up (according to my husband because I wasn't aware what my body was actually doing) skipping like a rock on the water on my butt across the dirt! I was laying on the ground laughing at what just happened when he finally caught up (turns out cows can run really fast when they're scared). He was hollering "are you O.K.? But I was laughing too hard to answer. When he finally figured out I was OK he joined in laughing. Once I got up I realized the neighbors were stopped on the road staring at me. I waved and started laughing again. I can only imagine what they were thinking LOL!!!

Posted - Jun 04 2018 : 07:51:35 AM What a great way to celebrate National Dairy Month.
I grew up on a small farm in the rural's of Florida. A cow was never something we owned but my Uncle did. When we would visit them over the summer vacation I loved watching him milk the cow. I even had the opportunity to Try and milk her. LOL I just could not get the hang of it. He would just laugh and show me over and over again. I loved all the goodies my Aunt would make from their farm raised animals and garden. My Uncle was a true blue Florida cowboy. He and my Grandfather taught my Mom everything she knows about growing a garden. She has passed her knowledge on to me.
One day I would love to own a little farm and have my own cow, chickens and vegetable garden.

Posted - Jun 01 2018 : 07:52:28 AM Winnie what a great give away. Thanks for hosting. I don't have a cow and don't see one in my future but a MaryJane book would be a great addition to my library.
Until I was seven years old I grew up on a watermelon farm in Dallas County. I remember Daisy the cow and her rich milk. Mother would put the cream in a mason jar and tie it to a rope that hung from the ceiling. Two of us girls would take turns swinging that jar back and forth until we had butter. If we got tired the other two sisters would take their turn at swinging the jar. Fresh butter on hot biscuits with mother's wild muscadine grape jelly was a treat for our hard work or was it play for us.
