We have learned how tasty this truly is despite it's name. I ran out of oatmeal (SHOCK AND AWE!) and so I had to come up with a cereal quick or the girls would riot. They love their hot cereal inthe morning. So I whipped some one one day and they have loved it since. It's a contest between the Corn meal mush and the oatmeal.

What I am wondering is are there any other ways of preparing it other than boiling it? We like it this way, with some honey and maple syrup, but I am always onthe look out for variety.

There was just an article in No Greater Joy on this! As someone else said you can serve it with syrup while it's hot or let it congeal until it's totally cool, slice and fry in hot oil until crispy. Yum!





As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord!

The best thing about hot cereals is the money you save not paying exorbitant "boxed" prices.

Other hot cereal ideas (nods to The Vegetarian Mother's Cookbook and the classic Laurel's Kitchen):

Cream of Millet Cereal (Toast 1 cup millet, then grind in coffee grinder, boil in 5 cups water, similar in texture to cream of wheat, may alleviate morning sickness)

High Protein Porridge (1/3 cup rinsed quinoa, 1/3 cup millet, 1/3 cup amaranth, 5 cups water, 1/4 cup sesame seeds, ground -- boil grains in 5 cups water 25-30 minutes, add ground seeds)

Warmed Cooked Rice Cereal (take 2 cups cooked rice, warm over low heat in one cup milk and fruit/nuts as desired -- try a diced pear and 1/4 cup chopped almonds + pinch ginger or nutmeg)

Overnight Rice Porridge (1 cup brown rice and 4.5 cups water in slow cooker overnight ~10 hours. Mix in fruit, nuts, seeds and milk)

I've only ever had mine (cornmeal mush) fried in butter and with syrup and powdered sugar, too. Not so healthy, but darn good!

I really like oatmeal. My husband fixes irish oats with cream, applesauce, cinnamon and brown sugar. It's the best!!! NO cream of wheat, for me, though please, and boy howdy do I love grits!!!

Just think of all of the roads there are...all of the things I haven't seen....yet.

We have cold cereal here too, but it is from natures path. Its the envirokids line, and they really like it, but on cold days, I would say every day through Fall and Winter and early Spring, they eat hot cereal and a little bit of tea. Thanks for all the great ideas!!

That is such a great idea TRina..I bet he may go for that. I have made granola in the past but if I make some with his favorite thing in it it would no doubt go over better.

I make a double batch of pordge atleast twice a week and we eat it as pordge the first morning and as fried mush the second...so yummy! Grits are also a big thing at our house...we flavor ours with real butter, salt, and shreaded cheese. Once again, left overs are fried as an afternoon snack or added to the soup pot. Jenny, try making some special "just for you" granola for hubby. I weaned mine off cold cereal that way.

I remember eating corn meal ush as a child, but mine was solid and fried with butter and syrup. Much like you eat scrapple. Oh goodness, I always get hungry when I'm here with y'all.

I grew up on corn meal mush and still love it. My kids love any hot cereal at all so we have fun experimenting. Peaches and cream is a favorite here too. We use brown sugar, butter and cream sometimes, as well as stirring in berries and cream too (frozen this time of year) My grandma used to save it in a glass loaf pan and then fry slices of it and serve with syrup and butter..(personally I like it better as a nice creamy hot cereal) I try really hard to avoid cold cereal..although my husband loves it and that makes it hard to NOT have in the house.

I love corn meal mush, and grits too! I don't eat gluten, and unless you buy scotch oats, or certified Gluten-free oats, they can be contaminated during milling...
My daughters love hot cereal in the morning too...we call it brain food! When I was so sick with that infection Eldon tried to give the older girls cold cereal before school, oh man! How would they learn if they didn't have their brain food??

We love to put some canned peaches and little bit of cream in ours! Super yummy and good for small children who need the extra fat...I usually just put Rice Dream in mine instead of cream..try the peaches, it's great.

Ya!! for children who eat healthy food...regular cold cereal scares the $^*@ out of me..all that sugar, artificial colors, and chemicals!
