I was in the store the other day and found a bag of 15 bean Soup mix in the dried beans isle. It is SOOOO good! The kind I bought was called Hurts HamBeens Brand. All you add is an onion, some diced tomatoes, some garlic, chili powder and either Ham or smoked sausage. I made mine with smoked sausage and it is SOOOOOOOOO yummy! I soaked my beans over night and threw all ingrediants into the crockpot this AM except for the meat and seasoning pack. I added those right when I got home from work. Just thought I would share! ENJOY!

I haven't been a huge bean cooker until recently! I will have to remember to try this on the next cool day.

It amazes me that it is already time to start planning for the winter season and what foods we will be cooking in the winter to nourish us and warm us through. I really believe that certain seasons have different needs. Have you ever noticed that cold season foods are usually more protien and carb laden? I think that is because we need the extra energy from the carbs to stay warm and we need to be "full" to feel warm as well. In summer we often eat much lighter meals that are more fiberous and lots more fruits.

What do you ladies think?

Hey Julie! That's the brand I buy, though I use vege stock, cottage ham (or butt ), onion, cayenne and bay leaf. I put my beans in the bottom, meat on top of the beans, onions on top of that, S&P, stock and then put it on low when I leave for work. That's what we had tonight, in fact! When I come home, I usually scoop out a couple of cups of the beans, and puree them in the processor, just until textured, and put them back in. Makes it a little thicker.

It's SOOOO Yummy!

15 bean soup is sooo good! I make mine with sauage and I love it.

Beans are a staple at our house. I love mixed bean soup and make it with what "leftovers" I have in the storage jars. When it's time to buy more beans, I pour the 1/4 to 1/2 cup of leftover beans that always seem to be sitting there into a special jar. It layers up really pretty with diffrent kinds of beans and when it is full I make soup. I soak the beans in water with lemon juice, yougart, or whey and cook up really slow with a few dried hot peppers the entire next day. I had which ever flavorings I have on hand: sage, garlic, dried pepper, cumin, chili powder, and of course salt and onion. If I have any bits of meat left over from making stock, I throw those in mid afternoon or for a special treat add chicken sausage (bought on sale).

We eat this as bean soup the first night, over a bed of greens or sprouts the following afternoon, and as a dip or sandwich spread for supper that eveing. That way I can cook once and feed my family 3 times, nobody ever complains...infact my little man (age 5) has been known to cheer.

My mom introduced me to HamBeens a number of years ago now, it is delicious! I don't put any meat in mine just spices etc.!

We just made a crockpot chicken stew with an enchilada soup recipe packet and it turned out really well surprisingly.Sometimes those packets are not flavorful enough just too salty or too peppery. Not so w/ Cuginata's(?) Enchilada Soup Mix. Chock full of beans,spices and good flavor. I decided to turn it into stew and added chopped chicken and near the end a cup or so of cooked rice. Yum! Also topped it with a dollop of sour cream...even better!
The guys topped with guacomole but I didn't think it looked very appetizing! I think alot of the tricks to these mixes is to use beef, chicken or vegetable stock as part of the water requirement. They just seem to enhance the flavor and gives a little extra nutrition. Served with crispy warm tortillas and you have a good hearty and easy meal. And easy clean up! Make brownies for dessert and no one complains!

Jenny, I'm with you. That little flavor packet is too salty for my taste. Give me a ham hock and I'm happy.

Julie, I'm glad you reminded me of that one! I'll have to pick some up. I love a hot bean soup for lunch every day, or lentil, or some other kind of good hearty soup. It warms me right to my bones!
