Here's something I've decided to do this coming year. And I'm plenty excited about it!

We normally eat pretty well. But hubby's doctor has asked that he pay more attention to limiting saturated fats, and let's face it; we could all eat better. SO, I decided I'm going to buy a pretty calendar that will live in one of the drawers in my kitchen. I haven't decided if I'm going to get a fancy spiral horsey one, or one with beautiful pictures of gardens or landscapes (like a Sierra Club one) but I'm going to have a week at a glance on a page, and on each day I'm going to write down what I'm planning for each meal.

That way I can make sure we get our three fishes, one beef, two vegetarian and one pork/poultry. We really need to get more fish in our diets. I can plan the sides too, based on what's coming out of the garden, or what's due to show up at the farmer's market, or just from what I get at the store. This way I can also pay attention to things like not too much rich cheese, getting the nine servings a day of veggies and fruits, etc.

The other thing it will do for me is NO MORE GETTING TO FOUR O'CLOCK AND WONDERING WHAT'S FOR DINNER!!!

Just thought I'd share.

Lorij, I'd have a whole bunch of people cooking for themselves.

I really think it'll be fun. I'll brainstorm once a week or two, and then know what to buy and what to take out of the freezer each day. Since I can put my daily appointments on the same calendar, I could also make sure I don't plan a labor intensive meal the same day I have a late afternoon appointment. Those can be crock pot days. I can also look ahead and make sure any things that need to be made ahead can be accomplished when it's convenient.

And I'll get to look at pretty pictures of horsies or landscapes and know that the freedom I gain gets me outside someplace beautiful, or on a wonderful horse. It's a nice reminder.

P.S I went shopping earlier this week and actually bought 10 packages of frozen fish...My jeans have been a little tight lately, perhaps from the Christmas baking?

I may have to follow Mary Ann's idea and start a calendar for menu planning, or else it will sit in the freezer forever....

I would love to have more fresh fish here - unfortunately the frozen filets are just so dang unappetizing! Wish we had a fish market. 20 years ago there was one here but he went out of business, not enough demand I guess.

We're definitely going with smaller portions, and using more veggies so the smaller meat portion goes unnoticed. And we have two places where we get our fish. One is a smaller grocery with a gourmet product mix, and they get fresh fish in on Mondays and Fridays. And the other place is an old fashioned butchershopt, and has some of the most imaginative premade fish dishes around! It's a whole new sort of fast food.

We do enjoy shellfish occasionally, regardless. I'm thinking that like eggs, that contribution to total cholesterol has been misunderstood. We also do salmon and a lot of tilapia.

I envy you living on the water. I grew up on a river, and I'm the only person I know who gets nostalgic at the smell of dead fish.

yeah like it's almost 4 what is for dinner?

i did notice in the other *show me your menus* thread many eat a load more meat and taters in the middle of the country. Sounds like You got a pretty effective plan

i eat fish or shellfood, which prolly isn't on a cholestrol limited diet, quite nearly every meal ...tho I live on the water... do you have a fishmonger who will call you when he gets fresh filet deliveries?

how many weigh meal portions or do like no bigger than the deck of cards for size control? what worked for us was to stop taking the serving bowls to the table and to serve the plates out of the pots and pans and carry them out to the table on a tray, when we had to get up for seconds we tended to not slather on more butter or reach for another cornstick ...also made less for me to wash
