This week I received 'Meals in a Jar' recipe book. I have looked through it and I am eager to get started. Before I can made a recipe I have to break down the measurements into one or two servings rather than 6 or 8. I cook for one and the recipes are for families.

The recipes are not for single jars/bags. Each recipe makes a different number of jars. Example: one recipe makes 16 (8 servings). When I adjust that to 2 servings I end up with 64 jars/bags. That's enough for me to have it once a week for a year with some left over. Now you see why it will take me awhile to figure this all out.

My plan is to spend some time adjusting the recipes; ordering online items like powdered vanilla, eggs, sour cream, etc. Powdered milk I can purchase locally. Onions are on sale this week so I will buy several bags to dry for onion powder. I will have to make sure I have plenty of wide mouth pint & quart jars and quart/gal freezer bags on hand. It will take me awhile before to gather everything together.

If any of you have made meals in a jar and can help me out I will appreciate it. Also the only online site I have now to order dried/powdered foods from is Amazon ~~~ I would like to know of others.

Julie, the sweet & sour chicken and chili sounds good. I would like the recipes.

Winnie, the book is much more than I knew when I ordered it. It's for convenience which I'm interested in, but also for disaster planning. I was looking for easy meals for my bad days.

Some of the recipes are all dried/powdered foods that water is added to. Others have canned meat that you mix with dried ingredients. I will start with only dried/powdered recipes first. Later I may get a pressure cooker and can pints of meat.

Some of the recipes call for packaging seasonings separate in little packets. Let's say the recipe calls for canned meat, dried/powdered foods, and separate seasonings/sauces then you would put all the items in one bag along with cooking instructions. If the recipe made 16 (8 servings) then you would have 16 separate bags. In my case with making smaller servings than that would be 64 bags. I don't have that much panty space so I will have to come up with a way for me to do it or cut the recipe way down.

To make any of the recipes it will call for a lot of planning before I actually do it. Along with the logistics of gathering everything I need I will have to re-think how I run my kitchen. I already dry a lot of my food so that will help. I may add a meal in a jar recipe every week or so and see how I do with it.

Sara, what type of meals are in these jars? All the dried parts that you then add meat or other ingredients? I am having a hard time imagining what you are talking about. It sounds very interesting and a great way to stock up the pantry!

Last month I had canned "Sweet & Sour Chicken" in pint jars, that you serve over rice when you get ready to make it. For me that is two meals and it is very good. I also can, chili and beef stew in pint jars. If you are interested in any of these recipes, let me know and I will write them here on this thread.
