Posted - Mar 12 2015 : 6:34:59 PM I remember from a few years ago Mary Jane Magazine had an article on Rabbit Pot Pie. Anyone have that recipe? With another 16 kits born Monday our freezer will be full! I think the article talked about her hunting and eating wild rabbit. But I know it will work with my meat rabbits. Thanks for the help!

Baby rabbits are doing well. We've not lost any this winter which is a pretty good feat considering we birthed 56!
The rabbit pot pie was wonderful....just needed more gravy.

Posted - Apr 17 2015 : 5:28:09 PM Hi Aalea, How are the baby bunnies doing? How did the rabbit pot pie turn out?
My son's New Zealand doe had her litter of 6 kits a week ago. 4 broken black (or gold tipped black steel) and 2 solid black or steel. No pictures yet as I need to buy batteries for the camera.

Posted - Mar 27 2015 : 6:16:54 PM It's a beautiful baby bunny. I'll have to post pictures when ours are born. Who knows what the cross of the red NZ daddy (who carries genes for black, albino, dilute, and gold tipped steel) will have with the blue broken NZ doe? I am hopeful for some sandy (dilute red) broken kits... the pelts would be lovely for slippers and doll clothes.

Posted - Mar 26 2015 : 9:39:07 PM I think the rabbit pot pie recipe is in one of Mary Jane's books. It's either the idea book/lifebook or the outpost book. Cindy

Posted - Mar 26 2015 : 6:07:34 PM I don't have the magazine recipe, but you should be able to substitute rabbit for the chicken or turkey in just about any pot pie recipe. Or put leftover rabbit stew into your baking dish and top with a pie crust, then bake until the crust is done. If you have a pressure canner you can put up rabbit in jars like you would other meats, if you need to make freezer room.
My kids have 4-H rabbits, so I hear you on the freezer thing. New Zealand's and Mini Rexes here. Our first 2015 litter is due April 7th... My oldest son's red buck on the younger son's blue broken doe. My parents buy some of the extra rabbit meat from the boys @$4/lb to help them afford their project. This will be Jewel's first litter, so I hope she's a good mom... Lakota is an experienced buck. We were planning to put Jewel on the black buck we kept out of Lakota's litter with our REW doe Crystal last summer, but he's still too young and not interested in girls yet.
