Posted - Nov 05 2024 : 10:25:41 AM Sara, I do like a bargain. I was at grocery store and ask guy if they were going to mark down all that bagged kale. He said he was going to throw it out. I got 4 bags on the cheap. I volunteer at food bank and once a month we are given a box of produce. I'm glad to have the food and preserve what we dont eat within a day.

Posted - Nov 02 2024 : 07:10:47 AM Tara, I've always liked to go through baskets of fruit or vegetables in the back or on the marked down shelves. With a little work there's good food for eating, canning, or drying.

Posted - Nov 01 2024 : 6:33:53 PM Diced apples and apple slices in dehydrator Last Tues we went back to apple orchard in NC. They has a huge crate of 2nds or "culls" in the back. I dug thru and found small but still in good shape fruit. About a 1/2 bushel. I dont have any idea the variety. I had to try a few slices and oh yum! It's going to be a challenge not to eat them all by the weekend. I want diced apples to enjoy this winter on oatmeal.

Posted - Oct 25 2024 : 7:38:08 PM I look at it this way, Sara. Better dried than wasted! I can sneak mushrooms into our meals if they are chopped up very small. My husband doesn't like them, but I have managed to get them into so many different things! Dehydrating sounds like a great idea to me! I can sneak them into more things that they! Hehehehe

I thought I was done with herbs but we got some much needed rain and the temps are still quite warm. Everything is greening up again! I might be drying another round of herbs soon.

Posted - Sep 19 2024 : 06:24:43 AM Thanks Heather, not much of wild herbs to gather in town but the stray dandelion and wild violets. I do have all kinds of mushrooms, yellow & pinks too, popping up in my yard but I don't even like to touch them because I don't know what they are.
Drying Greek oregano this morning.

Posted - Sep 19 2024 : 06:05:24 AM I store all my dehydrated fruit in a mylar bag in the freezer. I've found it keeps for almost a year that way - that's as long as it lasts before we eat it all. It may last longer. In the past I put it in canning jars but there got to be too many for my freezer.
Sara - I'm slowly learning what herbs are safe. Mostly I'm picking berries. We have a lot of black raspberries and blackberries that grow in our fence rows and woods. I get alfalfa, red clover, dandelion, and plantain from the fields. The woods are full of wild violets in the spring. I've got a few books that help me identify herbs and how to use them. I just don't have as much time as I need to figure them all out :)

Posted - Sep 19 2024 : 04:43:55 AM How do you store dehydrated pears? I am going to orchard next week if I can get pears I must try dehydrating. Sara, didn't know sage was good for colds. I still have dried sage from last year. I'm still wondering what to do with all the sage still in garden

Posted - Sep 09 2024 : 07:07:50 AM Heather, the only wild crafting I have ever done is to use what I found in crafts, never to make tea or use in cooking. I was never sure of what was edible and what was not. The only wild plants I was ever sure enough of to eat were dandelion leaves and wild violets.

Posted - Sep 08 2024 : 5:58:35 PM Michele - I'm glad it worked for you!
Sara - I have a bunch of sage in my freezer (that's where I store my dried herbs). I agree - it isn't very tasty (that's why there's so much left). I like what you said about finding peace when working with your herbs. I feel that way too - especially when I'm in the woods or fields wild crafting herbs.

Posted - Sep 08 2024 : 06:44:30 AM Drying sage today. Sage is one of the medicinal herbs. Sage tea is good if taken at the beginning of a cold or the flu. It's not tasty but can be okay if mixed with more favorable herbs.

Posted - Sep 06 2024 : 05:50:29 AM I wanted to do our apples this year but it looks like we aren't going to get many if any at all. We've had little to no rain this summer. Everything is already brown and the leaves are falling off green and turning brown on the ground.

Posted - Sep 05 2024 : 03:23:03 AM Final batch of pears will finish today. I picked the last of the basil too, pulled the plants. Since my dehydrator was full, I thought I would try the oven method that Heather does. I do have a dehydrator setting so gave it a go. It goes right to 150 for a temp setting. They were dry in a hour or so, not very long. Which in my life is a good thing. I did (very) little reading and they said to dry herbs at 125 to speed things up. And that basil has a large amount of water in the leaves, which is why it takes so long. So why does a dehydrator say to dry herbs at 95 degrees? Either way, thanks Heather for your drying method!!

Posted - Sep 04 2024 : 06:37:38 AM Thanks Heather and Michelle, I didn't know if it was like apple recipes where you dipped the pears in lemon juice.
I was going to dry spearmint this morning but it rained overnight and it's not a good idea to cut herbs when wet because you can transfer germs/viruses.

Posted - Sep 03 2024 : 12:50:26 PM I love dried pears! Sadly, the raccoons got all of mine this year :( Sara - when I dried mine last year I just pealed them, cored them, and sliced them.
I have some calendula flowers drying for some oil later. I need to get on the goldenrod that's flowering and some more plantain leaves soon.
