Nice Tara!
Heather in my book you do what works best for you! I do think it is interesting to see how others accomplish a project or task. I might learn a better way that way.

Lisa, I can just see your Annie, Sherman, and forgive me I can't recall the other's name, munching away on the lemongrass. My Annie might do the same thing, but my lemongrass is in a galvanized tub on cinder blocks, well out of her reach.

I would harvest my lemongrass but the Dobermans munch on it when they go outside, and not much is left. I guess that's OK. It must provide something they love and/or need.

Heather before I was given my dehydrator I dried herbs in the oven. When it comes to drying what works best for each of us is what we should keep on doing.

This morning I read up on how to harvest and dry lemongrass. Harvest before first frost. I put it in my Day Planner for Nov so I wouldn't forget. Will have to re-read about how to dry when I harvest because by then I will have forgotten. First time for me to dry lemongrass. I did watch a video on u-tube on drying lemongrass that was interesting.

This may not be the right way - I just kind of jumped right in to dehydrating without researching too much - but, when my basil is doing well, I cut the stems off (it usually regrows 2 stems if you cut it just above a set of leaves) and then after I wash it I put the entire thing on the cookie sheet (I dry mine in the oven on warm with the door cracked open). The leaves dry before the stems so I know it's done when I run my hand over them and they all break off the stem. I put the leaves in a mylar bag in the freezer and toss the stems. Like I said, it may not be the right way, but it works for me and saves me a lot of time.

Michelle, I pinch them off with my thumb nail. I don't have enough strength in my fingers to do a lot of pulling. If it wasn't for the short stem at the base of the leaf, I would strip the whole stem but then I would be left with the short stem to pinch or cut off.

Sara, do you pull leaves off your basil or cut stems? I usually pull leaves off, but wondering if there is a better way to do it.

My basil is not doing well at all. I have a dehydrator full of bananas :)

Thanks Tara.

My one basil plant is doing good too. Years ago an extension agent told my sister that each year some plants did really good for everyone while other plants did not. He did not know why.

Sara, take care of you

I have been over blessed with basil this year. Another 4 trays in the dehydrator.
I do have 2, 1 gallon bags of basil in freezer. I am also drying stevia but in the sun. I dont want the basil scent to mix with the stevia

MS fatigue dropped on me like a ton of bricks so I washed the lemon thyme and dried it like I normally do on the stems.

Today I am drying rosemary for the winter. I prefer fresh rosemary but, in the winter, I can't always be on the back deck.

Michelle, it's what I have read in all my herb books and drying books. No explanation given on why. Taking the large leaves off before drying makes sense to me so they will dry easier. Yesterday I took the sweet marjoram leaves off while sitting in my rocker watching TV. It was tedious but I got it done. Today I am drying lemon thyme. Will take the leaves off after washing to see what happens in the dryer. Will let you know how it goes.

Either way you dry those herbs, getting leaves off the stems takes time. Sara is there a reason why you want to dry small leaves on and large off?

Drying sweet marjoram this morning. Second cutting and the last. Hopefully if we have a mild winter, it will winter over on the back deck.

A reminder: to dry small leaf herbs leave on the stem --- large leaf herbs are dried off the stem.

Dried parsley from Aldi today. As I have said before I have given up on growing parsley from either plant or seed.

I picked and dried some basil the other day, from my ma's garden. Guess it is worth its weight in gold, haha. My basil seed did not come up. I had issues with the seeds I started inside. They came up and then just sat there, hardly growing. I blame the potting soil, which was for veggies. Once I put them in the garden they took off.

$18!?! That's crazy! Makes me wish my basil would have taken off so I can sell some LOL!

Sara - I didn't even have luck direct sowing outdoors this year. It was so cool this spring then it just got crazy hot. My marigolds and zinnias didn't even grow. I've never had trouble with them before.

Sara, I need to clip a few leaves from stevia. 1 pound of basil picked from garden( this was over 3 weeks). Half went into freezer, rest dried and into jar.
A pound of fresh basil from farmer's co-op would cost $18(inset shocked look), glad I can grow this herb.

Heather, about the only thing I can grow from seed successfully is zinnias and that's because I sow them outdoors. I don't have sunny windows to grow seeds inside.

I'm waiting for my lemon thyme to start to bloom so I can harvest and dry it. I find that I like the lemon thyme better than the regular kind.

I'm not having much luck with anything from seed this year, except for some sunflowers. Makes me feel like I've wasted seeds! Anyway, I have some bananas in the dehydrator and spearmint in the oven. Kind of an odd smell combination in the house :)

My chamomile reseeds itself. So that is nice. Good luck with yours Heather. I do have a few things that I planted that are struggling to come up. Basil and Parsley to name two.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for some chamomile. I planted some seeds and they've had a heck of a time getting started.
