To keep your lettuce fresher in the fridge longer, put a paper towel in the container with the lettuce. Replace if necessary. Spinning after washing doesn't remove all the moisture, so this wicks away the excess. So easy, I feel dumb not to have done it sooner but it really works! And the lettuce stays crisper (we eat and grow mostly leaf lettuces so it is very noticeable). Give it a try!

I have another idea that works, most of the time. I finally broke down last year and got one of those salad spinners. Works like a charm, but I found that if I put a paper towel in the bowl before the lettuce or herbs, then spin it, most of the water stays off the lettuce. I find that the drier the lettuce when put into the fridge, the better it keeps. You may have to repeat the process twice, (paper towel & lettuce in the spinner), but it really works!

I've also discovered the papertowel in the lettuce bag trick. To that I would add that I also squeeze out all the air and then zip lock the bag. This seems to help with the freshness and moisture problem, too.

Bramble, great advice. To add to that idea, when you make a big salad for a dinner and put it in the fridge to wait for serving, place a damp paper towel over the bowl. It keeps the salad really crisp and fresh until you put it on the table.
