Hi girls -

My niece just graduated last month. A while back when we were discussing what she would like to have or what she might need for college, she had mentioned that she would really love to have all of her grandma's recipes as well as mine to take with her when she goes off to college. I've decided to make her an altered recipe box as a keepsake, and I've gathered up all the recipes and am handwriting each one with a fun little anecdote about each person from whom the recipe came, or for which types of celebrations the recipe was served, etc. I would really like to incorporate a section called "Recipes for Happiness" in the box - sayings, advice and ideas that she can pull out when she's feeling homesick that will make her laugh, encourage her or uplift her in the tough times. Here are a few examples:

"Give of yourself – your time, your talents, your heart. Love isn’t love until it is given away.

"Look for the humor in every situation. Let it tickle your soul and bubble up into overflowing laughter. Laughter truly is the best medicine!

"Live with an attitude of gratitude. Be grateful for everyone in your life, everything you have and for everything you have to do. Happiness always comes when we realize just how full of blessing our lives truly are.

"Make everything you do an act of love – even the smallest things can be meaningful if done with the right perspective.

"Put on a dress and dance in the rain… or in the sun. Just twirl and twirl and twirl around until your heart feels free.

"Crank up the volume and sing!

"Find the best in everyone. Seeing themselves through your eyes will make the world a better place.

"Always be gracious and kind. Grace is living beauty. And kindness truly matters.

"If you are inspired to do something, never let anyone tell you it can’t be done. Do not give up! Just pray, trust your instincts and believe in yourself. You can do it! Faith, determination and persistence are the keys!

"Always love and remember the Lord your God. Have faith, pray and trust in Him for all things. 'In all your ways, acknowledge Him, and He will direct your paths!' (Proverbs 3:6)"

These are just a few examples, of course I'm sure you all have some wonderful farmgirl words of wisdom to share, though. I would love to hear and share your "Recipes for Happiness," too!

Hugs,

Nini

Some how my grandma managed to keep it a secret (which was very hard for her to do) - for my wedding my grandma contacted both my family and my husbands family and asked for recipes for our favorite foods (and any others that they wanted to share). It was my favorite gift - I have my husbands great grandmas sugar cookie recipe and my aunts dinner roll recipe that she wouldn't share with anyone! It's such a treasure to have. I'm sure your niece will love hers as well.

Here are a few "Words of Wisdom" one of my grandma's best friends included in my book:

Even if you are on the right track you might get ran over if you just sit there.

Math you learned in school is only sometimes true! For instance:
"Take away leaves less" Well that depends on what you do. For the more love you give away - the more comes back to you!

The best helping hand you can find is at the end of your arm.

Those who praise the Lord in spite of their trials turn their burdens into blessing.

And here's my favorite "recipe"

HAPPINESS
2 heaping cups of patience
1 heart full of love
2 hands full of generosity
Dash of laughter
1 head full of understanding

Sprinkle generously with kindness. Add plenty of faith and mix well. Spread over a period of a lifetime and serve to everyone you meet. Guaranteed to be fulfilling.

Today is my 13th wedding anniversary! When my friends insisted on giving me a "bridal shower" (not my style), I agreed, only if no gifts were allowed. When they did not like that idea, I told them that the only gifts I was accepting were their favorite recipes. So that is what I got as shower gifts, and it was perfect. A few are still used on a regular basis.

THAT is GREAT, Marlee! I'm going to put that in there just for fun... I was thinking also of adding a card with an envelope marked "For Emergency Only." In it I was going to place pizza money for those "epic fail" nights... Good Lord, you know I've had my share! When we were first married, the big joke used to be that the neighbors knew I was cooking when the big black clouds of smoke started billowing out of my windows and doors! I want her to remember that everyone makes mistakes, not to cry over them, but to have back-ups ready in an emergency. Premade food is best, but let's face it: sometimes when all your work ends up in disaster, there's nothing like a hot shower and pizza at the front door! LOL!

Emily! I love that you're going to do this, too! Are you putting anything unexpected and special in there for her, too?

I'd sure love to have hear more of YOUR "Recipes for Happiness" or words of wisdom, girls! Please do share!

Hugs -

That is such a great idea, Nini!

I have a recipe: Elephant Stew

1 Large elephant in pot add a lot of water.
If not enough for a crowd add 2 rabbits!

Lol Marlee

I read that in a cookbook! It was a Hoot!!

Nini,

What a beautiful, heartfelt gift! I always thought that would be a great gift to give a new wife. Have all of the women in the family (Both the bride and grooms family) write out 5-10 of their favorite recipes and put them in a recipe box. I love that you are handwritting all of them. That seems so much more personal to me and your "recipes for hapiness" is such a sweet and thoughtful idea. I know that will really warm her heart when she is feeling homesick.

Please post some pictures when you are finished!

Nini-
What a treasure you are passing on. It doesn't get better than that type of gift. I hope you don't mind if I borrow your idea for my daughter who is getting married.. a true gift g\from the heart!
