Does any one here use a planet box?

I'm trying to figure out which size to get for my DH. For me and the kids I think the smaller size will work fine...my DH on the other hand I just don't know. He is not a bread eater and prefers salads, and I can see a much bigger salad would fit in the larger box.

I just don't know though, at the prices I don't want to make a mistake on what size to get.

I will probably end up just buying 1 large, and 3 smaller ones to begin with and then get more later. We really need a total of 12 all together though. Which will cost upwards of a thousand dollars. In the end in general we probably won't be saving money by buying them (IE we could eat out a LOT for a grand!). But, in health I think they would be worth it, I like that they are NOT plastic. And the places we would need them at most also do not allow glass, but require you bring your own lunch. I also like that things stay in place in it. So If I put one thing in one of the cut outs it won't spill into another cut out. I wish I had enough money to just buy them and not think about it....but I will have to really really budget these in and probably only get to buy a few at a time till we get out complete amount we will be needing. The thing is...I have a lot of health issues and three small children.

There's conventions that we go to that last up to three days. They on average are 8 hour days, not including the time it takes to get the children ready in the morning for them, travel time, and fun association/play time before and after each days events. So often I don't feel like after we come home from such a day to wash a dish and make another lunch/breakfast for the next day. So that's why I am going to need so many, so I have enough for all three days, for all the family members so I can wait and wash them when the whole function is over, and not each night. Some times I probably can come home and wash each night, but not always. Some times I am doing good to come home, bath the kids and just get in bed, to start all over the next day!

Any way, my point to the post is...has any one tried them, what size, and what about DH's?

I think these are pretty neat for portion control, Heather. We don't use them, though. When our son was little, however, I bought one of those Lunchables and reused the container over and over, filling it with healthy, yummy homemade foods, fruits and vegetables and sealing it with plastic wrap - he just loved it. I couldn't find a price on the planet boxes - how expensive are they? If you will get many years uses out of them, the investment might totally be worth it! :)

I wonder how good these would be,though. Are those section lids permanently attached? I wonder if they might fall off and get lost along the way... that might become even more expensive in the long run, you know? You also cannot use these in a microwave for foods that need to be re-heated because they're metal... And how would you keep cold foods cold - I must've missed that? Would they all fit nicely into a huge cooler? And I couldn't see what they are made of - but if they are aluminum, you really need to be careful with that as well because various studies have shown that aluminum contribute to Parkinson's disease. I don't mean to be a downer, truly. I would personally just have a few different concerns about them.

I do see that you'd like to stay away from plastic. We do use plastic, and if you're amenable to using it at all, you might find some other really great comparmental containers by Tupperware or Rubbermaid that you can reuse over and over. You might also want to check out Bento boxes - they come in all shapes, sizes and compartments.

We stick to Thermos products ourselves. My husband has an awesome little half-sized Thermos (metal lined) for quick meals like soup, pasta, stews and other items (it includes a cup/lid and a spork that attaches to the side). They can also be used for cold items, but those I usually pack in separate plastic containers (usually reused from other items purchased at the grocery), and then everything goes into his big Stanley lunch box/cooler with a little ice pack, and put on the lid. Then we slip his large hot drink Thermos into a special groove on the lid, pop up the handle to lock everything and then he's good to go. Everything that needs to stay hot, stays hot, everything that needs to stay cold stays cold, and everything is separated in its own container - no running into each other unless he tosses them all into one container. It's not super pretty, but it really does the job for us! You would still need to heat up the foods for the Thermoses, of course, but you can make lots of other individual cold portions a few days in advance and them just pop them into a cooler before you head out the door, you know?

Whenever we go anywhere as a family, we usually pack up a larger cooler with all our foods and a big bag of ice, and just bring cups, plates, utensils and napkins, and wash those when we come home (although, if I wasn't able to wash them for a few days, I'd probably use disposables). We keep bread for sandwiches and other dry snacks in a sack on the side at the ready. We also keep a big Thermos jug of whatever beverage we like along side it, serve it up in mugs, and use the ice in the cooler to keep it refreshingly cold. As far as not having to wash them every day, I'd be hesitant about that with anything but metal (which you can always just rinse in a pinch until you can wash, of course), so I do see where you're going with that.

The Planet boxes are super cute, but I just don't think they'd be practical for us, at least - eghads, they sound pretty expensive, too. I know I can't offer you experience in using them, but I hope that somehow these thoughts help you in your decision-making! :)

Hugs -
