Hey ladies-
My apartment has a mature apple tree out front, but it has a worm problem. Every single apple has worm holes. Is there any thing I can do with them? I hate to see them wasted. |

My grandpa always used to laugh and say "that little worm didn't eat very much!"
I just cut out the bad parts and use the rest of the apple. Once you put it in a pie the whole apple turns brown anyway and the cosmetic brown spots aren't even visible with the cinnamon and all....

I haven't actually put any of this into practice yet but am thinking about doing it this year to a few selected trees in our old orchard.

i've found worm holes .. but NEVER a worm in apples from our trees. i agree, just cut the 'bad spot' away and use the rest of the apple .. check to make sure they haven't sprayed something awful on them recently though!
we have ZILLIONS of apples that have fallen to the ground .. we've been picking them up to put in the compost pile and oh WOWZER .. some of them are covered with BEES .. got stung this morning. the little bees hurt for a moment .. but then it goes away .. but i saw some HUGE KILLER BEES on some of the apples today .. ha! turned that picking up job over to honey hunk!

The author of the tightwad gazette called this selective squeamishness. I just made some apple butter out of not so good apples with worm holes. When i did find a critter inside I had to remind myself I could cut the yuk away. But I had to cut all of them anyway so I just used what I could from them and ended up with quite a bit.
Does anyone know a natural insecticide you could use to prevent worms?

If you had a press - wormy apples make good cider. If I had holes but no worms I would still eat them! But I wouldn't be grossed out by a worm eaither. I am weird like that.

Well, you might try applesauce, since the apples have to be sliced up to do that... you can just cut out the yuckies in the process. Good luck!
