Posted - Feb 10 2013 : 5:49:00 PM Hello Farm Girls!! Do you know what this Tuesday is? Some folks call it Shrove Tuesday, Fat Tuesday, or Donut Day. Our PA Dutch heritage in this family calls Tuesday, Fastnact Day. So today, my husband and I ventured for the first time in making our own homemade glazed and sugared donuts...and they are delicious!! This February tradition is similar to the fun and frolic of Carnival and Mardi Gras. The PA Dutch tradition was for woman to make donuts or baked goods and empty their pantry of all the unhealthy things that they typically give up for Lent. The process was quite lengthy in making these treats. I made the dough at 7:30, let it rise twice, cut out the donuts, let them rise again, then fried and sugared them. By the time we were finished it was almost 5pm. So, if you are hankering for a sweet homemade treat and can wait for dough to do its thing...try these this week and share them with family and friends:) Tomorrow and Tuesday I am delivering a few fastnachts to my kids and relatives along with a homemade Valentine card too. Hugs, Erica:)

Posted - Feb 12 2013 : 11:42:22 AM Hi Ladies,
I will post the recipe under a different heading and email them to you. I do have to say this though, they are best tasting when made fresh. We made these Sunday, and they were so good. But, now after having them for 2 days, I think they are getting harder and I have been storing them in airtight containers too. I don't know if that is typical for a donut to harden .... guess that's why they are made fresh daily...lol. Happy Fastnacht's Day....Erica

Posted - Feb 11 2013 : 06:17:33 AM Hi Linda,
No we didn't bake them. We deep fried them in oil. Unfortunately, they are not the healthiest treat, but its only once a year:) I got my recipe from an Amish cookbook...and really, they taste more like a bagel than a donut...but still good none the less. Erica:)
