Posted - Jan 08 2013 : 10:29:51 AM No Dorinda, the 45 candles were for our friend. I'm afraid my next birthday will require 53 candles on it! I'm sure there is a fire code against putting that many on any cake. I never thought to freeze my decorations. I sure wish I had, but alas, they are history now!
A superb 2013 to you & all the farmgirls!

Posted - Jan 07 2013 : 2:58:15 PM Oh Dawn that is so great that your cake turned out tasty. Was the 45 candles for you? If so Happy Birthday. I bet it looked great with the dark chocolate shavings on top. I wonder if you can freeze the fondant decorations and use them for another time. Anyways Happy New Year to you and your family.

Posted - Jan 06 2013 : 2:21:05 PM Yes Dorinda, I did make it. The fondant topping pieces came out beautifully. Unfortunately I made the mistake of making the chocolate filling (next page in the magazine) for the cake. Even though the filling was well chilled, it oozed out the sides when I put my beautiful white frosting on it. The end result looked like bird poop! The decorations were so formal & the cake so rustic looking (per my husband) that they didn't go together at all.
I swallowed a bitter pill and kept my decorations off. Instead I put dark chocolate shavings on top of the cake. I had also made the Black Forest Pound Cake, recipe in an earlier issue, and it came out perfect. So at the party I said that buttercream cake was for the kids & the black forest one for the adults (there's brandy in the cherry sauce). My friends, non-bakers, were impressed I had made two cakes & were quite happy with them. I didn't tell them that I had wasted 3 days on the fondant decorations. Everyone was happy and I wanted to keep it that way. My girlfriend actually put 45 candles on the cakes, so the decorations would have just been in the way!
I'll stick to rustic, that I can do!

Posted - Dec 28 2012 : 4:44:30 PM Thanks for the picture Dorinda. I will definitely take a picture of my cake. I am sticking with the white fondant and silver dust though. It won't be as fancy and colorful as yours.
I'm glad to hear your cake came out so well. I feel a bit less nervous about trying the recipe myself. You did a beautiful job on your decorating too.
I hope you have a great New Years too! Thanks again for sharing.

Posted - Dec 28 2012 : 3:25:29 PM Yes I made the cake. It was very good. Remember I decided to do something different for the decoration on top. I bought the edible sugar paper. I thought there would be at least 3 sheets in it. But there was only one. Phooey!!! So with the one sheet my son's fiancee made the cut out candy canes around it. So a few minutes of thinking and time running out I came up with this. Everyone loved the cake. I would make it again. I had a very Merry Christmas.

Posted - Dec 21 2012 : 08:29:45 AM I worked with the Fondant when I was in cake decorating school years ago. Of course i kept trying to make my own and it never turned out to well. I must of been sleeping in that class. LOL Its been quite a few years back since I worked with it. I remember I rolled it out on top of powdered sugar. I was making little mini cakes that looked like little presents. I'm thinking I cut out stripps of it and very carefully tied little bows around the miniature cakes. Hum I am trying to remember how I dyed the stripps different colors. I will have to think on that one. I am getting up in age so I don't do very many cakes anymore. My children are grown and gone. I took the classes back around when I was 27 years old. They had just came out with Fondant. It has probably changed over the years. It was $27.00 for a pound of it at Walmart. We do not have a Michael's close by. Good luck with the cake also. I will figure something out. I made pecan brittle today.

Posted - Dec 21 2012 : 06:38:26 AM Dorinda, I bought my fondant at Michael's. The price wasn't too bad. I also got white edible dust for it and a mold with presents all over it. I thought I'd get more use out of the presents mold if I can actually make the decorations. I've never worked with fondant before, so this will be a learning experience for me. Any advice?
Don't forget to post a picture of your cake when it is done! My cake is for a friend's birthday, he was born New Year's Eve, but I'm decorating mine as a birthday cake.

Posted - Dec 20 2012 : 7:28:16 PM CJ It is just a white cake with just vanilla butter cream frosting. The snow flakes is made out of fondant. I am thinking that I might have to switch the fondant to maybe a edible sugar paper. They have red edible sugar paper. Fondant is so expensive and my home made fondant never turns out so great. So I might switch the decorations on top around a little. But I am going to follow the home made cake recipe as it is written. It sounds yummy. I hope it is moist.
