I want to begin making sourdough bread -- but can't find anyone to give me a little bit of their starter . . . do I have to make it then? and how difficult is it? I tried to a few years ago with dreadful results (think mold, etc) -- so anyone have any to share or some good idea of doing it? I know I could buy some from King Arthur Flour, saw it in their catalog. . .

ideas?

thanks!

I have ground dried corn for cornbread (sourdough version), einkorn and kamut wheat berries for bread. I use a MockMill. It allows me to do a fine, silky grind. Love it and it's very inexpensive.

Sheila, you did a great job on your bread.

I am so excited- I followed Mary Jane's Sourdough starter recipe and it worked beautifully! I haven't had time to bake in the 2 weeks since I first started the "mother" but nursed it along until today when I made my first loaf of sourdough bread. Beautiful and delicious!

Wanted to share this yummy recipe with you, great with chile!

Here’s the recipe for Mexican Cornbread:
1 cup cornmeal
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 tsp. baking powder
¾ tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. salt
2 tblsp. sugar
1 1/2 c. milk
1/4 c. vegetable oil
2 eggs
1 cup sourdough starter
1 c. drained whole-kernel corn
1 medium onion, chopped
1 (4-oz.) can diced green chilies
1 (4-oz.) jar diece pimentos, drained (optional)
1 1/2 c. shredded Cheddar cheese

Generously grease 13 x 9 inch pan and set aside. Preheat oven to 400F degrees. In medium bowl stir together the cornmeal, flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt and sugar, set aside. In a large bowl, beat eggs and stir in sourdough starter, milk and oil. Stir in cornmeal mixture until just moistened. Fold into sourdough mixture. Pour into prepared baking dish, bake for 30-35 minutes or until surface springs back when touched with your fingers. Serve hot. Approximately 12 servings.

Enjoy!
CJ

I can't say I've read EVERYTHING about sourdough on the sisterhood, but I find it strange that what I DO find and read does not mention the Sourdough starter recipe from Maryjane's farm magazine itself. In the article entitled No-Knead Artisan Bread! Here is the link to the online version of it. <http://www.maryjanesfarm.org/Recipes-Patterns-Instructions/no-knead_bread.asp> I have to say though, CJ's recipe must be da bomb, everybody seems to want it. I may have to request it myself and see what's going on. :) And Cajungal, thanks, for sharing that's priceless.

Bright Blessings all my Sisters.

A belated thank you CeeJay for your sourdough starter recipe. It's so easy! Sorry it's taken me so long to thank you for that. It's been a bit crazy around here.

And the book you recommended; The Sourdough Cookbook by Rita Davenport, looks like the same book I checked out of the library years ago. I had forgotten the name of it and have been trying to remember the title. It was a great cookbook and I wanted to add it to my collection. I've found it on Amazon and it's on my wish list now. Thank you!

And Katie, I will send you the sourdough pancake recipe before the day is out.

Lora,
It will kinda look like it is separating . . . will do that when you replenish it too. That's just how it is and just stir it up!
Enjoy!

CJ, Thanks for the email - I started a batch last night. I put it in a gallon jar covered with a towel and set the whole in a big bowl just in case. I stirred it once so far because it looked like it was separating. Can hardly wait to make some rolls or something! Thanks again!

Hi Candace,

Can I get the recipe for sourdough pancakes? Thanks, I love sourdough too!

I started my current sourdough starter in 2008 when I was living in eastern Washington state. I brought it with me when we moved to Minnesota and have kept it going since. On occassion I use it almost completely with only about 1 tablespoon of the sourdough starter left. By adding flour and water, I can keep it going. I usually use tap water and King Arthur flour. I keep it in a King Arthur Flour sourdough crock on the backside of my counter and add flour and water to it regularly. If it gets too strong, I throw a bit of the sourdough starter in the compost pile or make a batch of sourdough pancakes and will add flour and water again so it will be less strong. I've never had a starter go bad. (I had a sourdough starter before we moved to Washington but didn't take it with me.) My favorite book for starting and keeping a sourdough starter alive is Local Breads by Daniel Leader. Tartine Bread by Chad Robertson is my go-to book for my favorite country French sourdough bread. I'm absolutely addicted! CJ, I'll be emailing you for your recipe for sourdough bread. I love the fabulous flavor of sourdough!

Do any of your girls know if the cinnamon raisin breakfast muffins recipe is the same recipe as the cinnamon raisin bread on MJ's sourdough bread? I went to the page where they show the recipes and all I see is a picture of the cinnamon raisin bread and only a recipe for the cinnamon raisin breakfast muffins. I wondered if they were one in the same. If not would one of you have this recipe? Thanks so much.

Could I please have the recipe too. I had one going quite a few years ago. I had shoulder surgery and kinda let it go. I would like to start it up again since its winter and thats when I really love to get baking bread. You all are inspiring me to start again. I can't remember what recipes I used or where I found them. I guess I will have to search for those again. Thanks so much.
