I have to brag a bit, sorry in advance.

My mom called me yesterday asking me about the price of a bushel of 'seconds' apples. I told her they were a great price. So today my mother called me and asked me, how do you can?

Let me give you some back story, back in 2010 I went with my mom to a bridal shower out of town. My DH had called and we were talking and suddenly I heard my mom in the other room talking to her sisters, "I am so sick of hearing about Mary Jane, and everything they say. I hate hearing about goat milk and making cheese. I am just so sick of it." In short I was fuming, after I got off the phone I said, "So you don't want me to talk about gardening and making my own food." She realized that I had heard the entire thing, needless to say, my Aunts got up from the table and ran away.

Now ladies before you start beating on my mother, she grew up in a suburb where your lawn was more important than your garden, and my grandma and grandpa had no need in their homes during WWII to grow anything, and same with my great grandmothers, there was always a financial way to provide these things. It was not a way of life for them, it was not even on their radar.

So that was over two years ago, and from then on, I never really talked about the MJF stuff with her. I knew she didn't care for it, and she never asked about it. She knows I can everything and then we were talking today and she was having me explain the boiling water bath canning. After I was done she said, "Could I can my Spaghetti sauce." I smiled and said, "I can it all the time." She then said, "Really, I could make a huge batch, can it and then just pull out a jar when I want spaghetti?"

Now I am unsure if she is going to can, but she does want me to show her how to can this weekend when she comes.

Thanks to everyone at the MJF boards here for changing my life! And now showing others, how awesome this "simple" life can be.

So today my mom bought an apple corer, peeler at the flea market! We were having races in my kitchen with the apple peelers. I am so proud of her.

YAY for farmgirls!!!
Fortunately for me, I grew up on a farm and my family is all pretty much on the same page. My only daughter is part of the Connection and Sisterhood. So, I'm grateful! I live in a rural community, small town atmosphere where most folks are in the same mind set.
It's when I have to intereact with some of the family on the other side that don't "get it" . . . but I just keep on doing my farmgirl thing and promoting it when I can.
You go girls! We are an AWESOME bunch!

Yes, this. I can't tell you how many friends of mine have kinda looked at me funny over the years. And now I can't tell you how many friends have seen what I do (well, what my family does) and end up converting so to speak... eating healthier, canning here and there, starting a garden, actually *thinking* about homeschooling (seriously, it's a big deal, especially since several moms in our moms groups are teachers!), and so on.

Way to go Emily! I can tell you that I get a few sideways glances from my girlfriends, but only until something homemade and yummy comes at Christmastime. Then I'm a hero. And kudos for your mom stepping out of her comfort zone to even start to ask. That takes a big person.

I have a similar story with my folks, Emily! And they too have finally come around. In fact they are building their retirement home next door to us out here on the farm and moving out next summer after a lifetime in the suburbs. They've gone from telling us everything we're doing out here is crazy and telling us to sell out to actually wanting to help out!

Awesome, Emily. Trust me, I've been on the receiving end of nasty a few times with my "farmgirl" lifestyle, but as others become educated on what it comprises, they always come around. Don't let anyone, even your mom, quiet your passion.

Farmgirl hugs,

Emily, I had the same thing here with my daughter. She got sick of hearing about Mary Jane's Farm and everything I do. She thinks it is so pioneer and Amish. She tells me she can just go out and buy what she wants and not have to spend so much time doing the homemade thing. I quit talking about Mary Jane and just keep on doing what I am doing. Now she is more content with me doing the simpler life.
