Have any of you canned apple pie filling before? My father and I canned a batch and we had an issue with the filling oozing out immediately after we took them out of the hot water bath. We followed the directions and left a 1/2 head space. The next batch we filled a little less, but we still had the problem. We used cornstarch instead of clearjel, but the recipes we looked at all called for cornstarch so I don't know why that would be a problem.

Any of you had this problem or know why it is happening?

I never had a problem, this last batch we had one ooze yesterday. I am unsure of what could be going wrong.

Same thing happened to me and I actually posted about it in August or Sept. I followed the directions to a T and the only thing I can decide to do next time is not to pack them in so much and/or I might even do the 1 inch head-space next time.

I've been keeping an eye on them and I don't see anything bad happening. I hope they are ok.....if not, what a waste of some good apples :( Hope yours are ok too, Anita!

I have used flour, cornstarch and clearjel...the only difference is one or the other seperates. leave 1 inch headapace, and be sure the rings are hand tight....

Just because the lid popped down doesn't mean you will be safe. I'd watch for broken seals for the next week or so.

They were quarts and the recipe said to do it for 20 minutes so that's what we did. Ours still sealed also, but it made me a little apprehensive because they always say to make sure the lip of the jar is free from debris for a tight seal. But if the button on the lid popped, they are good to go I guess??

On our last batch, we left more of a head space. A little oozing, but much better.

I had some ooze out, but it still sealed -- didn't seem to be a problem, just a sticky mess to clean off the jars before they went downstairs. . .

How long did you leave it in the water bath? Ten minutes for pints and fifteen for quarts is recommended. If you boiled the apples, they would expand.
