Posted - Sep 10 2012 : 3:28:54 PM Help! Hubby wants to pickle beans (we have them coming out our ears, our crop is AWESOME!) and I thought it would be nice to can them, but... we've never done it before, we have no equipment, etc. Is there a good place to buy the equipment that won't break the bank? I thought Freecycle or Craigslist, but hubby goes, "This is the wrong time of year. People won't be selling their stuff now." I don't know what all we need anyway. Total newbie to this! No clue how to begin. Any ideas/advice is appreciate from my sisters!
Thanks in advance!!

Posted - Sep 12 2012 : 10:11:53 AM I saw an older pressure canner at the local flea market last Sunday. Some people actually wait to sell their stuff until it is in season, I guess!

Posted - Sep 11 2012 : 8:32:57 PM I'd still try craigs list and local thrift stores.... I found a pressure canner and a water bath canner a couple of weeks ago at those places. You just never know. Also... start asking around your neighborhood- for crazy canners, like me, I have several of each kind and am usually willing to lend out one. Check with ladies, especially at church groups or senior centers, they usually have the stuff and the skills- but not enough energy or strength to actually can.

Posted - Sep 10 2012 : 5:24:07 PM I, too, would start with the Ball book. Ball also has a great beginners kit that you can find at Walmart, etc. Here is the Ball website: Have a Ball (pun intended)!

Posted - Sep 10 2012 : 4:52:53 PM Get tne Ball Canning book, it is very easy to follow, Wal-mart sells some canning stuff, Rural King has a lot of equipment, and most big hardware stores. Good luck! |
