i was helping my mom can tomatoes tuesday and as i was taking the jars out of the pressure canner, the top blew off one of the quart jars i was lifting out. it was like a bomb went off. i now have 1st, 2nd and 3rd degree burns on 9% of my body; mainly my hand, forearm and upper arm. some damage to my face as well.
ladies, please be careful! i know it was a freak accident, but could have been seriously worse.

Renee, I'm so sorry! that must be painful. When I've burned myself in the kitchen (not as bad), I immediately sprayed some lavender essential oil on my skin. It helps with the pain and to heal your skin fast. Speedy recovery!

Renee- I am so sorry that your burns are so bad. The Silvadene is amazing and will really help you heal. Also considure Emu oil as it has some amazing healing properties too. I hope your pain is manageable. *hugs* I know how bad those burns hurt. I accidentally poured super heated (hotter than boiling) water on my foot in high school and part of my leg. It took about 6 weeks before it was really healed and I think mine was only second degree. *hugs* Take care of yourself and keep those dressings on!

kristin, i did not get any glass. my mom found the top thrid of the jar and that is what blew off, basically like a cork. there were no shards or anything.
i wish i could say it didn't hurt. but, it really does. it looks like it may be thanksgiving or christmas until i am healed. this will be slow going. right now i have to dress it twice a day and i am using the silvadene ointment.
i think the jar was probably faulty in some way (hairline crack or something).
please be careful ladies, this is no fun at all.

I just thought of this.....I was taking a pharmacology class last year. I can't remember how we got on this subject...I think someone brought in an article or we watched some type of video.....anywho, it said that if you put egg whites on a burn after it happens it heals beautifully. Has anyone heard of doing this??

Ouch! I am so sorry that happened to you! I hope they gave you Silvadene cream. That stuff is amazig and when I had a very bad burn on my foot I used it religiously and I hardly have a scar- you have to see my foot in just the right light to see it.

I had someting similar happen with some tomatoes. I was using the Tattler lids where you tighten, then screw back 1/4 turn before processing. Then, after processing, you tighten fully. A few of my jars were filled to the brim & wanted to ooze out the top. I have been using Tattler for 3 yrs & this is the 1st time. Who knows?? I am so glad you are OK Renee. Be safe; farmgirls are tough!!!

That is scary. Did you get any glass? I was always worried about that and I take it for granted nothing will happen. But there's always a first time. I'm glad you will be ok but probably a little nervous around canners from now on. Take care and get well.

I sure hope you will be OK! I've often wondered about the different pressure on the bottles when you get them out even after you leave them for the proper time.
Years ago my Mom's pressure canner got plugged with a seed probably & it absolutely blew the lid right off & the kitchen window out! Thank goodness no one was hurt but we cleaned tomatoes up everywhere then painted.
I use mine but have never forgotten that day & faithfully check everything. Really they scare me but I've been told to use one when canning tomatoes & especially any other vegetables mixed with tomatoes.
I'll be thinking about you!!!!
