Posted - Sep 03 2012 : 7:53:47 PM It is that time of year again.
The tomatoes are ripening faster than I can process them, I have zucchinis that are huge, and so on... More produce than I can process.
The fruit flies are in my kitchen.
I am sitting here typing and trying to enjoy a glass of wine. But I am interrupted by fruit flies.
Anyone have a GOOD solution?

• Get a wide-mouthed jar out of the recycling, and put about an inch of vinegar or wine (red works best) in it. • Curve a piece of paper into a funnel with a half-inch opening at the small end, taping it to secure the shape. • Stick the funnel in the jar.
Voila! Flies are indeed drawn to vinegar, and they'll fly in, gorge themselves, and then can't manage to fly back out. We think there are worse ways for a fly to perish, and we're happy that this solution takes so little time and space.

Posted - Sep 19 2012 : 05:55:27 AM I NEED to buy some ACV too! The fruit flies are driving me crazy!!! Add to that, it's getting cooler outside and now all the outside flies want come in the house!
I had a b-day party Sunday afternoon. I spent the next day killing all the flies that got in the house during the party. I think I killed 100+ with just a fly swatter!!

Posted - Sep 09 2012 : 2:11:03 PM We have our share here of fruit flies in the kitchen, mostly due to my compost bowl. I tried the ACV and bowl method and it is working beautifully! Thanks for the great tip.

Posted - Sep 04 2012 : 06:28:38 AM Apple cider vinegar is the answer. I've been recycling smaller glass jars with metal lids for this purpose by poking tiny holes in the lids. It works just as well as plastic wrap and looks a bit more tidy on the counter. And they are so easy to rinse and re-use.

Posted - Sep 03 2012 : 10:07:29 PM Brenda, put apple cider vinegar in small bowl(s) and cover with plastic wrap, then poke holes in the plastic. Set the bowls around, the smell last only short time, as it evaporates, but the flies crawl in and can't get out. Good Luck! Farmgirl #946 Linda |
