Has anyone used a jelly bag? Or are you all just like me and use an old pillow case? I'd love to hear what you use. I'm going to be making grape jam and thinking about purchasing one. Love your thoughts and insight.

I just put the cooked berries in my colander over night. The juice is clear, my jellies are nice and clear. The trick is to not squeeze or press the fruit. I'm sure a pillow case would work if you were processing a lot of fruit.

Just so too many neat gadgets out there for a farm girl!
I don't know if the cheaper version of the squeezo works as well or not.

I'll check that out too ... you know, when we first bought our Amish farm I used Lehmans all the time ... You just forget about place you don't use after a while ... well, at my age anyway!
Thanks!

as Judith mentioned, we also have a steam juicer, from Lehmans, and that is a fantastic set of pots. My sister and I bought one, and share with my ma as well. Doing apples, and just finished elderberries. We have steamed pumpkin and squash before too. Well worth the expensive price.

I use the jelly bags with the stand. Mom always used cheesecloth. I never though of using pillow cases or pantyhose. Genius!

This year DH and I will use our steamer juicer for grape and black raspberry jelly. It is so cool and works slick as a whistle! We bought it at an Amish store.

I have a squeezo, and have used it for many many years. You can get cheaper versions, Lehmans, our local farm and fleet have them, for around 60 dollars. the easiest way to make tomato sauce.

Well!!! I use my hands for something like that, Mrs. Teri/M. What a hoot. LOL. I guess that has something to do with baking. I don't bake. Nothing I bake comes out good. However, I can bake a pumpkin bread. That is about the only thing that comes out good!
Thanks, again.

Yes, I bought the Mirro brand one. The bags wash nicely, and are reused. I have been using it for 2 years.

You can also use CLEAN pantyhose/nylons. Great way to recycle the ones with runs. Funny story. My late crazy aunt, many many moons ago, called my grandmother to find out what she strained jelly in. My grandmother replied she used her old clean panty hose. Later that evening, my crazy aunt (she had alot of problems) called my grandmother back and asked her how to clean the jelly out of them because she had an Eastern Star meeting to attend and didn't have any other hose. My late aunt was a trip at times. LOL!

I had a jelly bag for many years, and it fianlly gave out. They come with a nice stand too, to hold the bag up. I used it for jelly, and tomatoes. I strain the water off tomatoes when making sauce. So now I use good cheesecloth.

Mary Beth,
I use a pillow case and thought I would ask if the jelly bag was any good ... I will stick with my pillow case. It has always worked.

Thank you, Ky. It's okay with me if you giggled a little bit. LOL
Thanks for the information. The site was informative, however, I don't bake. Is that considered baking?
Your a good friend.

Teri, I'm a cheap old broad and I use cheesecloth or a pillow case. I find that 3 layers of cheese cloth with corners pulled up and tied to hang works awesome for grape jelly.

Ky, I have NO idea how one would or could use a jelly bag. I'm assuming this is a canning or baking questions. i know you're giggling right about now, but that is OK by me.
Explain what a jelly bag does, please. Your friend.

I use a jelly bag because, well, I just didn't know there were any alternatives. It was great when I made grape jam a couple of years ago and then this year, I used it to strain my blueberry syrup. Mine is fairly small though so I wonder if maybe a pillow case would be nice to strain out more fruit at a time?
