Does anyone here decorate cakes? My mom and I took the Wilton classes a few years ago and we've made a fair number of cakes over the past few years. I'm thinking about making my wedding cake...

So, has anyone ever painted on cakes? In all my looking at wedding cakes here recently, I came across painted cakes and I just LOVE the look. I don't want to do anything very elaborate...I'll be keeping it pretty simple, but I would love to paint/stencil on my cake. I'm thinking I'll do white fondant and I like the way it looks when you just wrap a ribbon around the bottom of each tier. I was thinking I could just stencil a small border near the top of each tier.

Any ideas or tips? I don't have colors picked yet (won't be having any bridesmaids and I'm just going to fancy up a nice bouquet of flowers from Walmart, I think) so I'm very open to suggestions right now!

Kayla, I've been decorating cakes for over 30 years.I've made both of my daughters wedding cakes and both grooms cake. Recently I did a friends wedding and grooms cake ( it had Texas Bluebonnets on it that I made with gum paste and painted them blue with air brushing.) There is cake paint that you can use along with a stencil. The fondant is very nice to use but tricky. Have to roll it really thin and it can tear but easily fixed. If you are doing a stacked teir (one teir one another) always use dowel rods same goes if using separator plates. Just remember the humity to factor in. I have even sewn my daughters wedding gowns and mine(many moons ago) even sewn my friends wedding gown. If I lived closer I would love to help you and your mom. If you need help just let me know. Sorry I got to this post late. Hope this helps. Good luck

I've decorated cakes for years, but not painted them. I hope you get more help than I can give.

I think you should find someone else to do your cake. You will be too stressed and not be able to relax and enjoy your day! I made my daughter's fondant wedding cake and even after practicing for over six months, still had trouble with it. I was up until 3 AM finishing. The fondant cakes can't be frozen before decorating due to sweating, especially in the summer. I hired someone to make my son's wedding cake!

My daughter's cake! Her colors were hot pink and black as you can tell. Notice cake is starting to droop due to the humidity!
She even wore a pink wedding dress!

I am trying to be the person my dogs think I am.

I get up every morning determined to both change the world and have one hell of a good time. Sometimes this makes planning my day difficult.
